Arizona Chickens

Thanks all!

I can not wait to start this adventure. I started off by making an incubator and had some friends give us some fertile eggs. Got 14 of 18 to hatch and my wife and kids cried when i gave the chicks away to the family who gave us the eggs and some family. Needless to say we have the bird bug and look forward to quail.

Will post some picts and more info as things progress.

Glad to see someone doing quail out near me! I am out in the EV too, closer to AJ. Once you are up and running maybe we can swap eggs for mixing up blood lines! I am still in the process of building my breeding groups but if you have any questions ask, or Sill, she is the quail guru.

New problem this year, My turkeys Are flying on my roof or my neighbor's roof at 5:30 in the morning. Should I trim one of their wings?
I've done that with my chickens - researched it a lot on youtube before doing so. I haven't had any escapes. I make sure to keep whatever I can pulled away from the fence line as well. Not sure if it works on turkeys. Best of luck

Yes clip their wings. If you need help I can come over and help you do it. I'm needing to do that with my muscovy girls. My DH said he saw them fly over my head when I went to let them free range! I knew they like to fly out when I open the door but didn't know they gained that much height! I'll be clipping their wings before they land in any neighbor yards. Everyone has dogs and they will be dinner.

I just found my RIR hen dead on her back :'( I suspect it's old age(as she was a hand me down chicken that was probably 5-7 years old then and I've had her for 2 more, but should I be concerned about anything else that my other girls might have caught? The temperatures up here are very mild (low 80's today) It makes me so sad she is gone as she was one of the friendliest of the bunch that would come running when I called her and was head lady.
Sorry you lost your grand old lady. Those hand me down chickens can be the best!

This morning I was sitting on a porch swing and one of my EE was preening my hair. I looked up at here and bam, she pecked me right in my eye. Ouch it hurt, but fortunately it missed the pupil, although my eye is bloody looking. She is so sweet, so I know it wasn't really aggression.
Ouch! Same thing happened to my mom. Don't let a chicken get that close to your face, they don't know better.

Hi fellow Arizonian!

I want to start raising coturnix quail. I live in the east valley of Phoenix and would like to visit with people in the valley who raise these quail to get more specifics of the challenges . I have gone throuh the quail forum many times i have my pens made and an incubator ready to and just want some advice locally before i jump!

Thank you!
Aaron
I'll give you a call. Quail are so fun. Cute little egg laying machines. They produce so well even when the chickens have all but stopped producing because of the heat the quail keep on laying.

White quail photo bomb!

Happy Labor Day peep's..

CHICKEN PALACE RESTORATION

Coming along, slow but sure. I managed to salvage enough parts from the damaged 3 roof sections to put together 2, will need to buy a 3rd, the pipes and tarps are too mangled. I just placed the fence panels on flat ground and stomped on them 'til they were reasonably flat. Nothing is quite as square as it was before, but the chickens don't seem terribly bothered about it. Here are some pics from today's midmorning break....

I remember having quail as a kid,
My dad could not bear to see them locked up in a cage,
so they got turned loose and lived on the side of the house for a few years
till some wild predator finally took the flock down...

they were a blast to watch!!!!

Your kids will adore them!!
