Arizona Chickens

Thanks.
I'm looking at the buckets for dry feed. I still want that out 24-7, but to get them eating the fermented figure might do better taking it away. I am drying the leftover fermented feed for hours on a low heat in the evening then later afternoon when I give them scratch I'm tossing it out too. So far, it's disappearing. Could be helped by my dogs too lol.

It's for helping with costs-waste & upping nutrition since they seem light to me. The keel is pronounced at the top & a bit between the legs. I know the one polish & his group aren't done growing, but with the cold coming on is like a bit more weight on them. Everyone is running around happy. So I'm glad about that. I'm going to try sprouts for them too. Was thinking about red or Anasazi beans I've had for a while. I'm finding conflicting info about them being harmful. Anyone know or have experience?

I can't speak to Anasazi or red bean sprouts, but my birds LOVE wheat grass, sunflower seed, and alfalfa sprouts. I sprout seeds for them in the colder months so they'll have a nutrition boost.

Only thing I read about beans being harmful is if you gave them dry, or even cracked and dry, meaning uncooked. The beans would expand inside the chicken when they would absorb moisture. Same reason not to let little children play with beans since they sometimes could insert into nostril. A sprouted bean is already wet and would not expand any further.

If the birds are young I wouldn't worry too much about the keel being pronounced. Many breeds develop skeletally long before they start putting meat on the bones. My birds take nearly a year for their breast meat to catch up to their keel structure. As long as the birds are old enough to be fully feathered (mine hit that stage around four-eight weeks) they should be fine in the cold. Don't force the weight on them. Let them grow at their own pace. As long as they have well-ventilated shelter they will be fine.

Thank you all! Yea, most of the birds are under a year. 4 are older. Not trying to force weight gain, but don't want to have it be hindered either.

I fed the fermented feed to them out of their bowls yesterday. Little brats seem to have eaten it all, twice what they did in the bowls. I'd put it in piles for them. Unless it magically dried & flew away or washed away with no signs of rain I think my birds don't like food bowls. Going to repeat today with no bowls & see what happens. If I could find the huge dog place mats I have I'd put it on those. That'll be next. What we don't do for our birds.

Went for a thereapudic photography shoot today in my new polish coop.

Got some pretty nice one of Benny, who is the only one who will cooperate for photos.

he really is filling out beautifully. Can't wait to show him next April, I have a feeling he is going to do very well .

I've noticed the same thing with my own birds. I put their feed in huge "bottlecaps" that measure about 16" in diameter and they feed pretty well, but if I just drop the feed directly on the ground they're ECSTATIC. Chickens like to scratch around in the dirt. It's us humans that 'complicate' things.

Lol very true. I'm kind of leaning towards forgetting the dishes, etc. Thinking no pile left, they're good. Pile left, too much. Yesterday I fed I think the same amount, maybe a bit more & it was gone. Going to do the same today. I'm late feeding thanks to terrible side effects to a new med. I'm straining feed as I type.
