Arizona Chickens

Hens are very noisy! At least mine are. Sometimes a hen will start to cackle after laying and then they all chime in and sing a little round! LOL.

But, they are no more noisy than a barking dog!!!

You may want to talk to your neighbors ahead of time. I don't know where you live, but some folks that live in HOA neighborhoods make it their business to know what is going on so they can report every infraction! I hate those HOAs. I think they just serve to pit neighbor against neighbor.

Having backyard chickens is sorta popular right now, so maybe they would be fine with it. Good luck with that!

So, I have my coop and run ready and all that's left is to add some chicks!! I want to get VERY young chicks... day old, if I can. It's a thing I have with animals - I always get them young because then I'm all they know. I realize chickens may be a little different than dogs, but it's how I roll

I live in the Gilbert/Queen Creek area - anyone have any siggestions on where to go? I would like a place that will take back a rooster if I end up with one, because I can only have hens. I'd also like to stick with bantams. The less conspicuous, the better, you know?

There is a breeder in Marana that raises different kinds of bantams.

If you are interested just PM me and I will give you her email. I just got 9 bantam cochins from her, for a myself and a friend. You can check out my website (link under my avatar) to see my little bantam cochins that I got from her

And she has more on the way plus other types of bantams.

She is very nice too

I was going to check out these guys. I havent had a chance yet. So I dont really know much about them. I found them on Craigs List but it might be worth a shot.
They said they have all sorts of chicks, ducks, turkey, guinea's, peacocks, etc. that they hatch out. So they have lots of chicks it said.
Here is their info...

C & C Feeds and Hatchery
Open Daily - Saturdays and Sundays too
Call us at 602-539-2397

They also said that they will take your unwanted roosters because they are an animal sanctuary as well.

WE DO ACCEPT HEALTHY TRADE IN'S OR HAVE A HEN WHO STARTS TO CROW BRING HIM TO OUR ROOSTER RESCUE SANCTUARY.
Sanctuary Website: http://ccwildlifesanctuary.com

If anyone has any info on these guys let us know

I was thinking about getting some Marans from them, unless I can find a breeder on here (from AZ) that has them available.

Where in Arizona are you? I live in the Glendale/Phoenix area and bought our barrred rock chicks at the Stock Shop ($3 each). I've been very happy with all my chicks from there - they've all been healthy and the last bunch have all been sexed correctly. Also, Pratt's feed store in Glendale almost always has baby chicks for sale.

If you want older chicks, check craigslist - here's a link to someone who has 2 month old barrred rocks & buff orpingtons for $10 each.

There's a hatchery in queen creek also (listed on craigslist), but I haven't checked them out - too far for me.

I'm in QC... I know what hatchery you're talking about but they are by appointment only!! Seems silly to me. C & C Hatchery, I think it's called. I've seen them on CL too. By the looks of it, they have a TON of breeds!

Hello all. I am in north phoenix also looking for chicks. I called that C&C hatchery number and the message said the number was for a DJ service. Anyone have any better luck? I will have to try the the Stock Shop in Glendale its closer to me anyway. Thanks for the info. Has anyone ever tried raising turkeys out here?

I guess they're more like a private farm/residence than a regular feed shop (by appt. only). It seems like there should be some kind of feed shop in QC - I know there's a lot of horse farms out there.

North Phoenix area - Besides the craigslist ad for older chicks & pullets (35th & Happy Valley), I know of 3 feed shops on the west side.

The Stock Shop (closest to me) and my favorite - 67th Ave & Thunderbird

Pratt's - big selection of chicks and some other pets - 2 locations - 35th Ave & Glendale and one in Surprise
http://www.prattspets.com/

The Feedlot - 19th Ave & Beardsley? (2020 W. Adobe Dr. in Phoenix) - this is where I bought my 2 barnevelder chicks - they are the smallest of the 3 shops and don't have as much selection, but if you live close enough it might be worth a look

There are some threads on BYC about the cost of feed and it seems like I am paying more than anyone else on those threads - I guess Phx/Glendale is an expensive place to buy feed.

I think my cost for a 50 lb bag of Purina layena crumbles is about $17 at The Stock Shop and it was slightly more at Pratt's. Does anyone here in AZ know where to get a better price on chicken feed?
