Arizona Chickens

Look at those gentle eyes. If he were mine, I would call him The Dude. "its all relative, man...."

LOL! That pretty well describes him. He's the only boy I've hatched that courted the girls from a very early age. At 10 weeks he was already calling the girls over to eat first, giving them treats, etc. I've only ever seen that behavior in much more mature roosters, but he's a natural with the ladies.

Heading out your way EARLY tomorrow morning! I set up four interviews and I'm very excited. The weather in the northeast has been rainy, cloudy, and cold. I'm looking forward to the sunshine and nice weather! I'll be visiting Cave Creek, Prescott Valley, Scottsdale, Glendale, Tempe, and Surprise. Seems like some beautiful areas!

Not that you asked but my family and I are full time RV'ers and have parked in each of those areas for an extended amount of time. Prescott Valley would have to get my vote if we were voting. Much much smaller than Phoenix and the people are so nice up there. So much we extended our stay up there to have our son. There's only like 40,000 people in PV I think.

Quick story and then I'll move on. When my wife was preggers she sent me downtown Prescott (separate city) to get her some fudge. I mentioned that my wife was pregnant and she asked if I wanted her to wrap the walnut fudge for her. She did and the wife loved it. About 2 weeks later my wife went to the fudgery and the girl asked if she liked the wrapping job and fudge. You won't find that in Phoenix.

On another note we are moving and I am counting down the days until I can start a flock again. My wife's first day at work is April 17th so it's coming quick. Her job is in Big Stone Gap, Va. There's a movie about it on Netflix with Ashley Judd. Nifty little community of 4,000.

We are selling our big diesel truck (sold actually) and are in the process of selling our 5th wheel and my motorcycle. Doing all of this in under 3 weeks has been challenging but I work better under pressure.

We'll be stopping in mid America to pick up our Idaho Pasture Pigs. 2 Breeding pairs for myself and a set for someone in NC. I actually sold the truck to a guy in NC and am getting paid to deliver it so I figured why not. We will haul our new to us vehicle or a uhaul to Va., unload the pigs, luggage and dogs and continue onto NC. Deliver the pigs and truck to their new owners and return to Big Stone Gap. Long winded I know but I figured some people here would want to follow this kind of journey. Should be fun.

(Off topic: Can't remember her name but has the lady who used to be in Phoenix and was traveling with her chickens in the bed of her truck checked in?)

Thinking about throwing a bale of hay or two in the bed of the truck with an open dog crate for a shelter if they want and then a hog panel covering the bed so they could jump out. Think this would be the best way? Also I'd put 2x10's or so up across the inside of the bed as to act like baffles for when I hit brakes or something. ?? If I just kept them in a crate they'd be poo covered and stressed is my thought. I think it's 8 hours from pick up to my place with the pigs. I then am going back a few weeks later to get another Breeding Pair (or two) to bring back to BSG.

Funny thing is we don't even know where we'll be staying when we get there yet. We are so crazy. Just pick up and go. First thing I will do after I get the pigs settled is get my coop and Delawares going.

Just had to share with my chicken people. Looked for a Va. page but if the one I found was it, it was a dead page. Guess I'll just have to rejoin this group. Finally getting chickens again is a good feeling and I won't be in envy every time I come back to this site.

FYI guys I have a Tasin TS-108 stainless steel meat grinder that I'm selling. It is awesome and can grind through chicken bones. That's why I bought it (raw feeding my dogs ) and why I thought that someone here might want it.

$159 new

Used once $95

Hello and Goodmorning!

So a bit of a rough week...

Mercury, one of my Polish Roostrrs, got attacked by what Im assuming was a hawk this Tuesday either late day or early morning (im thinking late day).

The reason Im thikning Hawk is because he has what I can only describe as a near peircing.

Whatever grabbed him seemed to have tallons.

o heres my forensics guess.

"The boys live in a chain link fenced in chicken coop with double layer bird mesh oover the top to prevent sky predators.

The chain link is big enough that they could fit their heads throuhg if they wanted, however in the half a year I have had them not such a thing ha occured, They didnt want to try so I figured they were safe.

Tuesday afternoon rools along, and a hawk can be spotted on the ground around our chicken coop, most likely hunting the doves/grackals There is a dead bird near the coop and the hawk i eating its kill.

Mercury, who is the cockiest of the bunch, attempt to fight the hawk throgh the chain link sticking his headd through the fence to atttempt at a peck.

The hawk use its talons to attempt to grab mercury and drag him through the fence, looping one talon through his ear canal and out through the bottom of his cheek.

Mercury panics, frees himself, and gets his head back through the fence. The hawk releases him and leaves.

We find merc the next morning all covered in blood on the right side of his face."

anyway so we freaked out, calmed down, cleaned him up with ome Betadine and then cooled his face off a it was welling really bad. I ended up dripping soem peroxide through the wound and letting it drain throgh to clean the inside without hurting him or tearing anything else.

Separated him from his brother, but still in sight so he wouldn't panic.

So ehe urvived the last 2 night, thank goodnes, however thismorning the back side of his right wattle and his throat/area around his esophagus is very swollen.

I'm worried he wont be able to breathe by tommorow if this swelling continues.

Im holding a cold rag on it hoping to get it to go down, however im still concerned its no going to be enough.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

I have ceased cleaning wi th be betadine (i only used it to get the initial blood off of his kin and feathers)

and I am now using bacatracin and peroxide, and cold rags.

I have to pipette water into his system because he doesn;t like walking to hiswaterer. I doubt he can hear or see out of his right side at all.

This is gonna seem weird, but here's what I would do. Look around your yard for Red Stemmed Filaree, It's growing all over my yard, so I'm sure you've got some somewhere. Pick some of the tender new leaves growing on the mesquites right now, and maybe just a couple leaves off a creosote bush. Make a tea. That can be used both internally and externally for infection and inflammation. If you happen to have access to nettle leaf tea, that would be great too. (you can also add this to warmed coconut oil and let steep for an hour, then strain, and use that as an oinment) I would give him lots of dark green vegetable matter to eat and other fruits and veggies, too.
