Arizona Chickens

So How do I convince her to get out of the nesting box...
It's actually probably one of the coolest spots in the yard.
But I don't want to take a chance....
My husband has been taking her out to make sure she eats, but she just goes right back in.
She's barely 6mos old, and just started laying on 4/22,
I'm surprised that she got broody so young... how often does that mean I'll have to deal with this? None of my other hens seem to have any inclination to brood.
I use a wire dog cage to break a broody. I put the cage in the chicken area under the all-day shade. I make sure there is nothing in the cage because you need the cool on the hen. There's food and water in the cage and I have a small plant saucer that I fill with ice to help her stay cool. I also put a couple baby aspirin in the water to help break her baby fever! I keep her there day and night until she quits going to the nest box. I just broke a broody and I caught her relatively early so it only took 2 days. One time I didn't catch my sweet Aussie soon enough and it was 5 or 6 days in the cage. It could take longer if your hen has been broody longer. I let them out at morning feed to see if they stay out of the nest box and if not put them right back in. It works.

If you are looking for rooster replacements I have three (who were supposed to be pullets!) that need to go. 1 Cuckoo Marans (I really wanted this one to be a hen!), 1 Welsummer and 1 EE - I'm more than willing to rehome. Otherwise they are going to freezer camp.

Graduation has come and gone and my move is getting closer! My dad and I start on the road Sunday. I still have a few more things to pack but luckily my pile of things that need to go with me is small! The rest of the stuff will go on a truck with my parent's things when they move at the end of July.

Looks like I am just in time for HOT weather! Lol!

Enjoy some pictures from graduation!

Hey everyone,

Benson, Az here. Have my very first flock of chickens and ducks, I'm seeing a lot of controversy on the best way to keep my feathered friends cool. They have plenty of shade and automatic waterers, plus the ducks have a wading pool. Any advice is appreciated.

You could also put up a misting system set up on a timer where it won't flow into the coop.

Welcome @CatNtheRoost! Is Benson cooler than Tucson? Maybe you have done plenty. I have misters BUT we saw 109 today and hotter tomorrow. Are your auto waterers cool water? Chickens don't like warm/hot water and won't drink - you want them to drink. I have water pans (oil pans from WalMart) in the shade - water stays cool and the hens stand in them as well. Yep means cleaning everyday. But it does work. Again welcome!
