Arizona Chickens

Because of the heat here that's why I've done a combo of things many might know or do this already but I'll list them here just in case I really feel using all of these measures will prevent heat deaths

1. Shade with bushes, canvas, and a open wood shelter
2. Big ice bottles which slowly melt so they can drink or sit near
3. Air conditioning during high heat hours
4. Ice chips before bedtime
5. ice in water
6. Cool water puddles where they can stand in, the mud cotes their feet too
7. Cool treats like watermelon or cold grapes
8. Misting system to cool ground and shaded area this also cools down the sand for their baths and they take dust baths there putting damp dirt on themselves which cools
9. Putting electrolytes in water

With #9 in your list: That's good as long as the electrolytes are not added to a metal drinking bowl or container. Use a plastic one.

This was in our little newspaper but it tells all about the crazy caterpillar! Do hope the link works.

The link worked for me. All of those green horned caterpillars have been gone now for about a week, but when they were all over the place here, my chickens went nuts eating them! It didn't seem to hurt them a bit. I guess it was more protein for them? One of my hens even ate a lizard a few months back, and she's still ok, too.

@BlueBaby I think this shows they are totally different from the tomato hornworm. My chickens would NOT eat the tomato hornworm at all! We've taken about two dozen off our tomato and pepper plants. Who knew.... Do wish we'd been able to see the other caterpillars so I could have taken some of them to those spoiled hens! LOL.......

@FeatherPugs Well, maybe next year if we have a good monsoon and they come back, you can come over here and scoop a bunch of them to bring back to your hens. :D As I have mentioned before my hen's do not free range but stay in an attached pen to the coop (for safety), but those caterpillars were everywhere! The hen's got so excited over them, like we would drool over a good steak! :drool
