Dianna, I remember that you sent me that info on the silkies with the diagram about the holes in the head the other day.

yes i just found that link and posed it.i would be concerned if i had silkies in with a larger breed of chicken , since you never know, so its safer , to keep them to them selves, knowing about the hole in their skulls, gosh

Well good thing that you researched and found that out before you decided if you wanted to breed those Showgirl Silkie ones.

I put more of my flocks eggs in the incubator earlier today. Hatching date is Sept. 24th.

I was reading somewhere a little while back about someone that was putting food coloring on their hens vents, so when they lay an egg is stains the egg with that color. They said it worked very well. I've been tempted... ;p

All this Australorp talk has got me so excited that we chose one for the flock! She's got the black/green sheen feathers and is such a joy to raise She just turned 13 weeks yesterday. WOW the blues and splash variety are simply gorgeous! I love this breed.

My husband's favorite hen in my flocks is an Australorp we adopted from a woman who's neighbors had complained to her HOA about "chicken noises". I have four hatchery Aussies from my very first flock that are now nearly 4 years old and most of them still lay at least 3 eggs per week. But the adopted Aussie is supposed to be from a breeder is she is one of the absolute sweetest hens I've ever owned and an outstanding layer at just over a year old.

As far as pairing them with Silkies, I have one Silkie hen named Didi that grew up with my four hatchery Aussie hens and two Barred Rock hens. Didi had a head bobble from early on that revealed her "weakness" to the larger fowl as they matured and several of the larger fowl became a bit aggressive with her. Eventually Didi's condition cleared up and she remained friends with the two BRs and one of the Aussies, but I can't recommend mixing Silkies and larger fowl unless you have a place set up to separate them if necessary, because it might be necessary.

If you try it and it works, let Dianna know. I guess that is a problem if you have more than one breed all laying eggs in the same nests?

Hey, I sent an email to Kurt from the Rattlesnake Ridge line asking him if it was true or not about him being out of the breeding of these breeder Australorps, because I have been planning on getting some more hatching eggs from his black pen this time. This is what he replied to my email:

Barb,
We are both still going back and forth with Dr now. BBS Aussies are up in the air for the present. Time will tell in the Spring. Don't count me out just yet. It is going to be a long winter for both of us.
