Arizona Chickens

I get frustrated when I see "vegetarian fed" on the cartons at the store. People get really excited and will pay extra for this. Last time I checked, my chickens have never passed up a cricket, lizard, grasshopper, moth, mouse, or any other creature unfortunate enough to cross their path. I am trying to picture one of my girls ignoring these tasty sources of protein  My chickens are omnivores and should be fed as such.
Is this commercial geared toward the gullible, clueless, uneducated city slickers who think they are buying into a good thing? Chickens are omnivores and opportunists, like us humans, scarfing up any little critter that cross their path, unless they're bigger and could possibly eat them. Shame on those companies that advertise the veggie diet. What they are advertising is not natural chicken behavior.

I bet that the reason why they are doing that commercial, is because they have been loosing out on their normal egg sales, as even more people are going to self-sustaining flocks. Remember a few years back when they had that big chicken die off or whatever, and the price for a dozen eggs went up to like $5.00 a dozen in the store? Well, I decided that I didn't want to buy egg's to eat for that price, so I got me some chicks to raise up instead, so that I could have egg's anytime that I wanted even though I got the breed that is a dual-purpose one.

Even though eggs are cheap again, people know you get what you pay for. When Safeway eggs are on sale for .99/doz, the farmer's market here is still selling out at $5.00/doz. That has to really get to the egg production companies. There are a lot of people on here who are trying their own home-grown chicken meat, too. Good, I say! People will only eat sub-standard food for so long.

Very true. Add to that the fact that animal protein is simply more expensive and typically goes rancid more quickly. If they can convince people that a "vegetarian diet" somehow equates to "better feed", then they can rely on government surplussed soybeans for their protein source, even though it's not a healthy source of protein for chickens or humans. Follow the money and you'll find the motivation.
