Arizona Chickens

I make lamb chops fried or broiled like a pork chop, serve with applesauce or mint.
Maybe I could try some smothered in mushroom and onion gravy...sorta ease my way into it. There are so many ways to prepare red meat, baked fried, broiled, grill, shredded, slow roasted, pressure cooked. Maybe trying it several different ways will give me a better perspective.

I actually think getting chick's in summer is great, in my experience they stay in the brooder they need heat actually so the lamp is hardly used and bc they need the heat they don't get too hot, also their feathers were mostly in by September and they started laying so they passed most of the heat needing it, or with fewer feathers and not so effected by it, in my experience ☺

My house faces Northwest and the garage can get pretty toasty in the afternoon. My sweeter heater shipped out today but I don't know if it will arrive before the chicks. I don't like the fact of possibly purchasing a 250-watt heat lamp because of the current it draws. Could I possibly use a 100-watt bulb for a day or two until my heater arrives?

Hi

Abandoned Chickens

I am caring for 10 chickens that have been abandoned in my neighborhood and I am seeking assistance to place them.

There is a bonded hen+rooster; 2 almost ready to crow roosters, a single hen and what I believe to be 5 young roosters.

If anyone in this AZ Chicken forum is interested in these chickens or perhaps has some tips on placing them I would be grateful.

I am located in Tempe

I do have pictures too. (hope the link works)

In a smaller container a 100 watt bulb is what I have used before. Set it up with a thermometer, and see if you can get 95 degrees at chick level in one end of the container.

My brooder will be 4 feet by 6 feet and 24 inches high with half screened lid. I can place the lamp at one end. I wanted it that big because it will give them more space to grow out before kicking them out into the new coop and run.

I don't want the dust and dander inside the house, so the garage will serve them well.

How did they come to be abandoned? Were they at one property or just roaming around? In my profession, they would be charged with animal neglect/abandonment and charged a hefty fine. No critter should be left in that situation. Take them to some type of animal shelter/adoption agency and let them live out there lives and hopefully someone will take them. Evidently, they provided some type of enjoyment to their owners for a while, but they shouldn't be left to fend for themselves. After all, they are domesticated by us and depend on us for their safety and care. We owe them the right to live to what ever their end purpose may be.

Bobby, I am using one of those XXL plastic dog crate as my brooder. I have a hanging lamp on a board that runs through those top slit holes in the crate. I am only using a 60 watt light bulb in the lamp. It does the trick, but I brood mine in the house in a spare room before moving them outside once fully feathered.

I am not interested myself in those, but it might help if you let the other's here know what general location that you are. That way maybe someone living close to you might take them?

X 2. I got my first chicks in Feb and the second in Sept and the summer chicks were much easier to deal with.

I like using 60w black light bulbs. You can get the cheap ones in any lighting dept, but if you get the more expensive ones in pet stores/dept's that are meant for reptiles they usually last alot longer as they are meant for providing heat. When I only need a tiny bit of heat (like chicks in week 3) I used to use the 25w red party light bulbs, but those have all been replaced by LED so not an option anymore.
