Arizona Chickens

Do any of you seasoned members remember Gallo Del Cielo? He used to post here quite a bit, and I think it's been years since hearing from him.

I remember him! He had an amazing aquaponics setup as well as a beautiful chicken coop setup. And he had recurring problems with hawks, as I recall.

Why are chicks such little tricksters?! I thought a different chick may have been a Roo, but now I’m thinking maybe THIS one is a Roo! Opinions? She (fingers crossed :lau) is a lovely Australorp from @BlueBaby :love

@Catwest I feel your pain, it's so hard to tell when they're young! How old is he/she? For reference, here is my black australorp at about 6 weeks. She came from a hatchery. You can see tiny comb & waddle development, but nothing crazy. @BlueBaby will probably have a much more informed guess for you  Roo or hen, it's certainly good looking. Love the coloring.

@SonoranChick We are at about 6 weeks, too (totally forgot that!). It is so hard to tell! Siblings all have yellow combs, but this one is darker. I’ll have to get better photos with the fancy schmancy camera. Only time will tell for certain, of course :barnie:lau and your little black Australorp is so pretty!! Perfect feathers!

Yes, sometimes some breed's can be trickster's. Can you post a more clearer picture, and get the side view of the whole chick in question??

If male, then they would also have a little bit darker pink wattles than the girls would have too.

I've been finding that by 9-10 weeks you can usually tell for sure. But it's already getting a little pink in the comb there's a good chance it's a boy....
Here's some Blue Aussie pullets from Privett Hatchery that are about the same age. It's hard to get a good pic of them as they're kinda shy...

Another thing you'll notice is the pullets will develop their "cushion" much more than a cockerel, and you can see it already on these girls.
