help me decide!! i want to enter the calender byc pic and only 2 submissions
which two should i enter do you think? I always see very pretty pics they have on their calendars but they are either really posed or so grassy and green, but lets represent chickens in real life too, in the desert!! lol

April and May were our worst months for snakes this year so far...we had two in April and four in May All rattlesnakes. I killed three of them myself, and my husband relocated the other three. I thought this summer would be the worst for rattlers but haven't seen one in about a month now, thank goodness. We have a nice fat king snake who lives in the garden and he seems to own the territory over there. And I've seen a few black racers zip across the road too. For some reason the snakes don't really bother me, I feel like we share the same habitat out here and I really don't like killing the rattlers but sometimes I have no other choice (for my safety and the dogs and chickens too).
My FAVORITE is the quail! I love them so much and could watch them all day. We should be seeing big families with little babies soon. I love the way the move about, they remind me a lot of the chickens. I always make sure we have water out for them.

I think all the reptile come out during the monsoons, the rain and bugs drive them out so I'm think I'll be seeing more soon rain is in the forecast but that's not until next week so that could change
Quail are great to watch we also keep a old wash bucket of water out for the wild animals I've even seen lizards drink from it, birds, bunnies, quail its kind of nice, peaceful

The bunnies come right up to me they even know the times I leave food like the chickens

I don't like the prairie dogs though they've kept me from having a garden so far and almost ruined my new bamboo last year.. they also leave droppings in my chickens food dishes

Anyone here have any experience with bumblefoot? I was out in the coop yesterday evening and was looking over my brown leghorn. When I looked at the bottom of her foot, I saw a tiny callus that was light brown. I then checked the rest of them, and they all have it, on both feet. Some have more of a black spot, they look kind of like a scab. I am sure it is the early stages of bumblefoot, and I'm devastated. As you all know, I'm quite obsessed with my girls and of course want them to live a healthy life, and I feel like I've somehow failed them. There is nothing sharp in the coop to cut them, but I definitely need to find the source of this. The good news is they are not too bothered by the condition yet, as it has not progressed to a later stage that would require surgery or cause them immense pain. They are all scratching, standing, running and roosting like normal, with no swelling. I have been looking at non-surgical options and feel like I caught it early enough, but I'm still so upset. I have twenty little chicken feet to treat! Suggestions from anyone here would be greatly appreciated. Also, just a public service announcement from my coop to yours: check your chickens feet, and check them often.

I actually like snakes...except for rattlers, I can't handle them! Haha. Luckily my neighbor is a bit of a specialist, so he relocates them for me if he is home. Otherwise, sorry rattlers! My human (and fur/feather) babies come first.

Can you post a couple pics? I have a little experience with it, and my Brahma rooster has one that I'm gonna have to deal with soon. Basically, you soak their foot to soften it up, get some help to hold the bird, and literally pull that scab out. There a plug of hardened white crud attached to it that will leave a gaping hole in the foot. Clean out the hole and make sure you got everything, pack it with something like neosporin, then cover with gauze and wrap with vet wrap. Repeat with the packing, gauze, and wrap for a few days until it's mostly closed up and happy again. I sure hope for your sake it's not on so many birds, because that would be a real project!!!!

Can you post a couple pics? I have a little experience with it, and my Brahma rooster has one that I'm gonna have to deal with soon. Basically, you soak their foot to soften it up, get some help to hold the bird, and literally pull that scab out. There a plug of hardened white crud attached to it that will leave a gaping hole in the foot. Clean out the hole and make sure you got everything, pack it with something like neosporin, then cover with gauze and wrap with vet wrap. Repeat with the packing, gauze, and wrap for a few days until it's mostly closed up and happy again. I sure hope for your sake it's not on so many birds, because that would be a real project!!!!

I will get some good pics up tomorrow. I've been doing a lot of research and I think I may try soaking them in a Tricide Neo/distilled water solution for a week. It's a product used to treat fish skin, oddly enough, but has been proven to treat bumblefoot in poultry as well. It does not involve cutting the foot or removing the plug/scab, therefore does not require wrapping the foot. I cannot fathom pulling the scab out, cleaning, medicating, and wrapping 20 chicken feet I'll do it if I have to but hopefully this soak will work instead! Apparently the stuff is pricey, which is a bummer. Oh well, they're definitely worth it. I'll keep you posted on this method...if I end up doing it and if it works.
I think I have narrowed down the culprit to the roosts...they are square shaped and not round. So we will sand the edges down tomorrow. They aren't necessarily sharp, but I just can't think of any other way they would have all gotten this. On both feet. The whole dang flock.
I'm just glad I caught it early, they don't seem to notice or be bothered at all by it. I need to treat it ASAP before it gets any worse.

Yep, I feed ground squirrels too - the chickens could care less and they are not scared of me either - little turds! I don't have a rabbit problem - never have (yet) for my yard. I feed quail and other birds(cracked corn) in the front of our house in the desert away from the yard so quail aren't a yard problem either. I love hearing the quail talking to each other. The ones with the dark circle on their tummys are males. Sometimes they get to a high point and just cry out - like crazy - looking for a mate. Sometimes I even get to see little ones being herded by the parents. I love living in the country - I just don't care for the heat lately.

No quail over here, but there's a black hen from across the street that I have seen fly over their fence and comes running over to my place to try to take the food from mine. I guess I must be feeding mine better over here! @cactusrota I thought that you were going to come back here and chicken-nap that hen!

Maybe you got them all before they could make baby rattlers in your yard?
