A couple years back, I found an egg in one of the waterpans in the run.

Now that you mention alfalfa, I know chickens justI had alfalfa in the run a while back and the chickens adored it. My brown leghorn loved it so much, she made her own perfect little nest and laid her eggs there for about a week. It was so cute. She wasn't broody or anything, she just didn't want to leave the alfalfa even for a minute. I would like to put some more in there, but need to wait until monsoon season ends.
it. I use alfalfa hay, or sometimes Tymothy hay as bedding. (my preference over pine shavings). I also purchase alfalfa pellets. These are actually sold/intended as rabbit food. I like to give it to them when fresh grass outside is not available. Some peeps soak and feed these pellets as a mash. Not sure if they ferment them as well. (read on other thread posts about this)Thank-you,

"You know we aren't supposed to lay our eggs out here, right Momo?"Thank-you,
Actually I'm trying to find what the egg should look like when I candle it..
Trying to verify so that I can remove the unhatchable eggs from the incubator.
At 16 days, If it's clear is it infertile? (there are two)
The rest are dark and have a defined air sack? (there are 6)
But I don't see any movement in any of the eggs.... and maybe the shell is too dark, but I don't see any veining... I don't want to give up on these eggs, but I also don't want to be totally dissapointed.
I found an old picture of the alfalfa nest! Everyone was gathered around to check it out"You know we aren't supposed to lay our eggs out here, right Momo?"

Has anyone's chickens started to molt yet? I just got an email from @Diannastarr and she said that her flock of the Rhode Island Whites are looking bedraggled and starting to loose feather's. She gave them all a bath, but only a couple of bugs were in the water along with some tiny grains of dirt like salt.
