So yesterday was spring cleaning day! Not for my house. That's still a mess. I cleaned out two of my largest chicken coops! I removed nearly twenty 5-gallon buckets of composted chicken manure + bedding and replaced it with four bales of new straw, plus fresh pine shavings again in their nesting boxes. My chickens are THRILLED. They LOVE scratching through fresh straw. If only my human family was so easy to please.

That is frightening, anyone know if there is some kinda website that you could go to that would show where the outbreaks are? I'm close to the CA border and I am worried about maybe wild birds bringing it here. I haven't been to poultry shows and after reading this, I don't believe I'm ever going too, my additions right now are from my own flock, although I might consider from tractor supply or something, do you know if those sold at feed stores and stuff are safe?

My biggest concern right now is how close I am to CA, I'm just a hours ride to Needles, have a friend who owns a feed store and every now and then I am offered chickens if she can't sell them before they go from cute fuzzy butt and turn into roosters or hens. I've declined before as I wasn't wanting to add more to my flock, then I caught the hatching bug..lol, but those are coming from my own flock and I will decline any from her.. if I get any it's going to be from a hatchery or maybe one of the feed stores, I want to know where their chicks came from.

That's the best thing to do. Either hatch from your own flock, or before taking in any new ones, make sure of where they are coming from. I haven't taken in any new chickens into my flock since I got those grow-out chick's and egg's from @cactusrota , so my flock is ok. I haven't been to any chicken show's, and all of my flock are backyard mutts, so they can't go there anyways. :gigMy flock has a purpose of giving me egg's, and entertaining me, and they are big enough so that if the economy does another nose-dive, I will still have some meat to eat.
 
lol, I like back yard mutts, we only have 3 animals that are breed specific, our shitzu, min pen and wienie dog.. everyone else is a mutt including me. The show Roo's and Hens are pretty to look at, I'm sure give you eggs and you could if you needed eat them, eggs and meat are my main reasons for having them, watching them and giggling are added bonuses. I have a hard time spending 20.00 on a pair of shoes, I certainly can't see myself spending a couple of hundred on a chicken..lol.

I think that the show chicken's aren't bred for their egg laying abilities anyway's, and they are bred instead for how they look. It's just another "fashion show".
