Arizona Chickens

I think that the show chicken's aren't bred for their egg laying abilities anyway's, and they are bred instead for how they look. It's just another "fashion show".
I've never been one for "fashion" my clothes are for wearing, not showing off, my car's are for getting me from point A to point B without leaving me walking for help..lol. I'm happy for those that enjoy showing their birds and that can afford that kinda up keep.. just not for me, I'd be sad if I lost my flock to a coyote, but I feel for them as those birds are a investment. We use to live in SC, had several homes that were up there in the 6+ digits. They were "lake front" properties, we had a drought and those lake fronts were sitting in front of mud.. Boats and docks sitting in mud.. I'll take my mutts.

I just ask my husband if while he was on the phone with our nephew if he heard something roll past him, he told me know, I told him it was the bedside tv stand that we'd gotten for me when I was laid up with a broken ankle..lol, I was checking out the new humidikit along with the incubator and used it to sit them on, they fit perfectly.. so now they are in the brooder/guest room and going to be set with eggs, he laughed at me, said "well, you could be off gambling or doing something worse" We live just over the hill from Laughlin. So I am off to get the eggs going, have fun :) I'll let everyone know how this humidikit works out if anyone has used one, could you let me know? I've not been able to find much in the way of information on how to do it.. the owners manual leaves a lot to be desired.

My biggest concern right now is how close I am to CA, I'm just a hours ride to Needles, have a friend who owns a feed store and every now and then I am offered chickens if she can't sell them before they go from cute fuzzy butt and turn into roosters or hens. I've declined before as I wasn't wanting to add more to my flock, then I caught the hatching bug..lol, but those are coming from my own flock and I will decline any from her.. if I get any it's going to be from a hatchery or maybe one of the feed stores, I want to know where their chicks came from.
Here in AZ most feed stores get chicks from either Privett Hatchery in NM, or Murray McMurray in Iowa. They should be safe. But I would suggest buying birds that just arrived, not birds that have been sitting in the brooder for a few days. That increases the chances of handling and passing of diseases. So someone that just came back from California could handle the chicks, etc... Ask when they are expecting their shipments and show up that afternoon.

I'm already too old :old to worry about fashion. When I was younger I used to a bit, but many of those were so uncomfortable to have to wear. It also can cost a lot of money if you are trying to keep up with the Jones's. I just want to dress in clothing that I am comfortable in these day's, and if people don't like it they can just look the other way. I don't live my life to please those kind of people. :lau

I'm a mutt, I'm a mutt!! WhooHoo who knew we'd have a whole conglomeration of happy mutts!! That was a good article @starri33. I would think there might be a map at the US Dept of Agriculture for this outbreak. Good thing I wasn't going for chicks until next September'ish......... Came home to 6 girls out of the yard. My back gate was open. The no-body gnome did it. Or someone needed eggs for breakfast and forgot to close it!

I think that every person in the world is really a mutt rather they want to admit it or not, and some may not even know that they are a mutt. Every country has been conquered at one time or another in the past, and interbreeding between them went on.

That's precisely why I decided not to show birds. I've enjoyed going to the shows and have met a few really cool people there, but other people look at me as if I've committed blasphemy for asking such astonishing questions as, "How many eggs does this breed lay per year and at what age?" or "What's their butchering weight at 18-20 weeks?" I love my birds. I really do. And I love the eye candy of their beautiful plumage, but not all of us want just feathery pets. My birds have jobs to do to supply food for my family.

Plus, reading about and hearing about all of the diseases and parasites that affect many of the show birds....it just doesn't seem worth the effort. I've had one outbreak of mites in my flocks in four years and have no desire to revisit such an event, and that happened after I brought in 'donated' birds from a friend who didn't want to keep chickens anymore. Never again.

I'm definitely a mutt. I researched back through 13 nationalities before finally deciding it wasn't worth my time to look further.
