Hi everyone. I am in Sierra Vista. I have been in contact with Lisa about some of her chicks. I feel so indecisive about what kind of chicks to get, age, breed, etc.. I plan on getting about 5-6 for now. We do live in a suburban area so i can't have any roos. I have spoken to 3 different breeders/hatcheries in arizona and they have offered me a swap if i get roos. I just don't know how I will feel giving up a chicken that i have raised for months. I also kind of want fancier chicks than average. My husband only wants bantam silkies since they are so cute. I have heard they arent great layers though. I was thinking of ordering some but they are $$ because of
overnight shipping and the additional cost for guaranteed female chicks. Just don't know if i want to spend that much since I am a newbie.

my biggest concern is i only want hens.

that is insane!!!!!!!!!!! do you know if they are all roos or pullets or what they are even?

Yep all pullets just like I ordered. I mean there might be the accidental roo but all pullet. Its a really long story but basically they filled an order that I changed and the person who packed my order did not read the handwritten correction before packing. I called them and it was their mistake so no charge to me. My hubby said what are you calling them for? You can't ship the chicks back they will die! LOL

Edit: There are 52 cinnamon queens and 52 buff orpington. 104 total which was my original order.

As for breeds, I think it depends on your reason for getting chickens. Do you mostly want them as pets or are you also hoping to not buy any more store-bought eggs? I've never had bantams, but I think their eggs are pretty small. You might want to mix your flock - maybe a few standards that lay large eggs (for baking) & a few bantams that lay small eggs (for the cuteness factor).

As for standard size chickens: Easter eggers are plenty cute with those fluffy faces and lay a decent size egg. Barred rocks lay LOTs of large eggs and are friendly chickens.

I bought all our chicks from the local feedstore, so they were pretty inexpensive (sexed pullets were $2.99 each & $3.99 for the easter eggers). They gave us a 90% chance of them being pullets - we were lucky - all 10 of them turned out to be females. I don't think any seller or breeder can give you a 100% success rate unless you buy sexlinks.

If you want purebreds or unusual breeds, then they will cost more and you will probably need to order them (unless you can find a local breeder).

BellLisamo is right - you should be able to get all your questions answered on BYC - check out the other threads too.

I want them for eggs, manure(garden) and pets. Being cute is a plus. My husband isn't a bird person but he loves the silkies because they don't look as chicken-y. I was definitely going to mix up my flock. All the feed stores are sold out right now. I know lisa has plenty. The breeders didn't guarantee they would be female, they just said they would swap out free of charge for me.

Thanks!
