It look's like she's going to be a big girl! She share's mine and Hazel's birthday! How cool is that? Congrats grandma!

This thread has seem pretty nice all things considering... but there's been alot of chattering about stuff that I don't care about so I lose interest alot....

So, sweet and sour. That last broody lost her one chick.. the one that abandoned the rest of her eggs and then the ones I tried to reintroduce I found missing their heads.... I have a theory. I don't think she did it. I think since that one chick was a couple days ahead and was ready to leave the nest that she took him on an outing and left the other two unprotected and another bird did it.
The chick drowned in water that I thought was too high for him to get into. Interestingly, the hen went back into the nest all broody again as if she wanted to start all over. So I took a chance and put the chicks from the incubator under her. So far so good. I also planted an egg in another nest hoping the rest of the hens will get the hint and leave her alone.
Cross your fingers.


@Hamburg if you still want chicks... I can still bring you ones that simply aren't my favorites. I have more than enough!

Yea, I come and go from this one. You can only talk so much about the weather lol. Most of the people on this thread are ok.

When you hatch chicks without a broody, do you move them in with bigger chickens or keep those separate and add a roo to the pullets later?

I usually keep mine separate from the main flock but in an area where they can be seen. A space within the big space. Generally it is for about 12 weeks although I might start the introducing at around 10 weeks. I've never had good luck doing it any other way. Others have. I like having a couple broody girls that I can give new chicks to in the middle of the night. I still watch those close but generally works. Only one time did it not work. I don't know about the roo as I don't keep a roo with my flock. We will see how things go come about September.
