Arizona Chickens

They are here. We went to the stock shop and my sweet granddaughter said...that on...this one...and the nice young man ran after them in that funny round coop, scooped them up and now we have them. Soooo cute. I think I enjoyed it as much as she did. I keep them in the warm laundry room at night and outside by day. Got my coop I ordered today too. will take awhile to get it up; but think I made a mistake, when I read the directions they said the fiberglass shelter section would heat up and to keep it out of the direct sun...What!! this is Arizona!! I thought since it was not metal I would be okay.. I got this one for it was light and easy to move around the yard. A new spot each time for the chickens and fertilizer for the grass....guess I will staple that green 70% screening material over it to keep it cool in the summer... for winter it will be great. Think that will work???

The neighbor dog killed my roo!!!!

I went out this morning and the hardware cloth was split, and the chain link behind it bent back and Joe Rocket (that's our roo) was getting licked by Maggie, the neighbor's dog. Maggie has a cut on her mouth. I really think it was her.
I hate this!!! I like Maggie and I really like the neighbors, but this is the second roo I've lost and thought it was Maggie.

Any advice? The neighbors said they were in the process of building a kennel for her. I think that would help. My dog, Girl (who doesn't bother my chickens) and Maggie are best friends. You can see how this is going to be difficult.

I remember picking ours out last fall - it's definitely fun to come home with those little cuties. How many chicks did you get? Do you know what kind? I was there today (the stock shop) picking up a fly trap and of course, I always peek at the chicks even though I can't buy anymore now. It looked like they had buff orpingtons, production reds, barred rocks, and araucana/easter eggers in the big round tub (I may have missed a breed).

As for your shelter - I don't have know anything about the material you're talking about. Is it possible to keep the coop under a shade tree during the summer? They will probably not want to be in the sun at all, till it cools off again.

Someone actually came and said something to me that made me just shake my head in awe. The person was looking at white leghorns, red sex links, and they already had a black chicken of some sort at their home. He looked at me and said in all seriousness....If the white chickens lay white eggs and the red chickens lay red eggs then will I get black eggs from my black chicken?

Some of my year old layers need to go to make room for all of the Ameraucanas I have.

I'll probably let go of a Barred Rock, A couple of Rhodies, my LB Leghorn, my PW Leghorn, and my Black Sex link.

Interested?

That is where we got them..right out of that big round tub. We got one that looks almost yellow could be that buff one you mentioned and two were a nice redish brown might be the production red, all have decorative wings. I have another person in the shop I work (Im a hairdresser) and he is getting his this week. He thought that green sun filter would do the trick. as he has used it before. I will want to cover the whole pen with it. Cant believe how lulu I am now that I am mothering chicks. My husband will help me with the pen today or tomorrow. Cant wait to see them in the grass.
