Arizona Chickens

Hi All, I find myself in the age-old situation of too many Roos! I've been lucky so far, but this last batch of chicks I ended up with 3 out of 10 Buff Orps being boys. I am going to keep one with the flock but the other two need to find a new home or I need the name of a place where I can take them for.....processing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ewww! When Grandma would chop their heads off and they'd run around the yard splattering blood all over, there was NOTHING she could do to get me to go outside until they were all finished and the chickens were picked up off the grass. I'd hide for hours and my uncle had to rescue me. Not sure I could do that to a bird I'd taken care of. I need to buy straight run girls.

You need to ask for Pullet's Only then, because if you ask for straight run you will be getting the boy's also. Even asking for most younger chick's as pullet's it's not a full proof way to keep from having a boy or two snuck in to your batch. Hatching egg's on your own, you will have a 50/50 chance of boy's or girl's that will hatch from them.

Yes. I suddenly decided that I want all hens. I live far enough away from anybody else that crowing wouldn't bother anybody and am usually up before 5 am anyway, so rooster noise would not be an issue. It would probably give this place a welcome farm-y feel. But it sounds like the boys aren't that well behaved in addition to being noisy.

I can only keep hens due to city regulations. I do not hatch any chicks for that reason. I choose to get established hens, (older pullets) .
Other option is to choose Sexink breeds.
The inevitable 50/50 when hatching is a reality in current science. There is research into determining sex before hatch, but it is not operational yet.

Try a cone, that doesn’t happen.

Good afternoon AZ. I recently added these lovely ladies to my flock. Rescued them actually, and they’re locked in the mini coop. One has a rose comb so not sure of breed mix. Barred but some of the white is a pretty gold color

I have 3, they don't seem to do any better or worse than my rocks, Lorps or sussex'. Then again, I live up north where it rarely gets over 95
