Arizona Chickens

I got Roger to eat bread out of my hand yesterday! Bread was the key - thank you all for the discussion on that ( especially @BlueBaby & @Parront ). I know Bluebaby must have told me before that she fed them bread when little, sometimes I forget and need reminders.

Up till now I was trying to offer him sunflower seeds and he never even came close to eating those out of my hand. And he eats so gently out of my hand - not like the hens who hit my fingers so hard.

That is the treat he grew up with. My chicks that i raised here think seeds are a great treat because that's what they got from me when they were little. All of the NNs I got from @BlueBaby like bread better!

Well, my flock now has one of those goat trough feeder's that hook's over the fence. I bought 2 of them from TSC, but only hung one of them over my horse panel railing that makes up my chicken run. Had to place a bit of wood boarding behind it to make it a tighter fit over the railing, as I still want to be able to take it off and clean it if necessary. I didn't put the metal top thing on it though. This is the one here:

That's really nice! I just picked one up without dividers from craigslist for my future livestock (whatever that may be...lol). It was included in a bundle of other feeders, hay feeder racks and a man-gate from some goat keepers in Paulden. Scrubbed & disinfected now setting in sun till needed.

Buying a cheap loaf of bread at the store is cheaper than buying a bag of sunflower seed's. I don't feed them the whole loaf all at once, so it can still last a few day's. Even as chick's in the brooder, I don't start breaking the bread up into crumble size until they are about 2 week's old. The first time they are afraid of it because it's something strange that might eat them. After they figure it out, they become little piggies and chase each other trying to get them.

Thats funny, these chickens run under the parrot cage to get the parrot pellets! Of course she doesn't want them to leave, so she throws more down to keep them there.

I was leaning to goats, but I that's a big leap in learning curve on care, commitment & building the enclosures. I was also considering pigs but they don't actually live on weeds. Researching to decide what is next besides chickens and probably ducks.

Sheep are supposed to eat the weed's right down to the roots. That's why in the old day's the cattle men didn't like the sheep herder's.

@CaroleW There are sheep that shed themselves, so you wouldn't have to shear them.
