Arizona Chickens

I have 1 rooster and 1 hen. They are just shy of 4 months old, so we haven't started breeding them yet. Also, while they have their white faces, the white face is not nearly as large as it looks on adults.

I'm in Yuma, AZ.

I can go take photos of them. I only really took photos of the "What is this?" chickens, so kind of spaced on the white faced!
Are you still interested in photos if we're not breeding them yet?

For those AZ residents with coops already...

Did you build an enclosed coop or an 'open' coop? I'm in the process of building a coop and I'm still able to plan a LOT. This is what it looks like so far:

It's on it's side...but hopefully you can see where I'm going. I'm just curious if a tarp/cover for monsoon season & summer will be good enough of if I should build a permanent roof?

Permanent roof.

Our coop has only two sides, and the sides connect. But ours is about 8 feet high, and the top 4 feet is just open chicken wire. It just gets too hot to have it fully enclosed. But they do need some protection from the wind, and when it does get cold here (especially cold and raining) they need to be able to snuggle into a warm corner. You might also have temporary walls, or hinged doors that cover a side only when weather is bad.

Well, this is definitely the place for grandparents! We have a huge snowbird season, so we have a LOT of R.V. parks, 55 and older parks, and 'senior citizen communities'. We have 3 museums, lots of golfing, lots of swimming pools, lots of restaurants (good and bad), lots of shopping, lots of hotels. We have some good doctors and some bad doctors. We are 2 to 3 hours away from Scripps in San Diego and the major treatment centers in Phoenix, and we do have our own hospital. Yuma has expanded a lot in the past 10 years to accommodate all the people that came from California and the Phoenix area. That is when houses all over the US sold for too much. As a result, we got a lot more of the chains like Home Depot, Kohl's, and Circuit City. We are a border city and it shows. There are so many Hispanics, they are the majority.

Best things about Yuma:
1. It's still NOT a really big city.
2. December through March are GORGEOUS.
3. Senior citizens (honestly, they're friendlier than everyone else)
4. You can still buy rural homes that are within a few miles of town, some with many neighbors, some with none or few.
5. It never, ever snows.

Worst things about Yuma:
1. July through September are HOTTER than most people can imagine.
2. Your choice for electricity is APS, or APS, or APS.
3. Customer service is laughable, if you weren't so angry. (Not everywhere, but there are stores I won't go into anymore because of this.)
4. The Foothills traffic when snowbirds are here. Avoid it.
5. It never, ever snows.


If they move here, let me know and I'll tell you the best local restaurants. They're not on those review websites, fortunately! We don't want to wait longer for a table so Mr. Scottsdale and Ms. San Diego can finish their food!

Look, I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but from first-hand knowledge, don't ever let your grandparents go into a nursing home here. What nobody thinks of is that the same people that are rude to you behind the perfume counter here are the same people that will be taking 24 hour care of your loved one. Have them move in with you, or something, ANYTHING but go into one of those places here. Just a thought you might have in mind when you all come to conclusions.

I just wanted to add that I loved Yuma once I got there but that trip from phoenix to yuma was really not that wonderful. It's just dry brown desert. I have only visited there once but I thought it seemed like a lovely little town. My first thought upon arriving there was, "Hey let's live here honey."

oh thank you. i had spoken to her before. She said she would call me back. she was selling him for $25 obo, i offered a trade or $20, and she wanted guineas. I told her the guineas werent for trade. Well guess she didnt like that, so she NEVER CALLED ME BACK, and instead she REPOSTED the ad in tucson.

Messed up.

We built an open coop - 3 sided and they did great all winter long. Even with it being open, they still get hot and are panting at night. Click on my BYC page for pictures.

edited to say - they ARE panting at night (somehow I had typed in "not panting")​

ArizonaDesertChicks - Love the coop! My coop will be going up against the wall 'longways'. I suppose I will deal with winter weather as it comes. Right now my big concern is monsoon season - my girls are going to need a roof!
