Of course I will! Roger and Cowgirl and the two NN blue-ish girls from you. Also some pure Barred Hollands (auto-sexing rare breed).

Later this year maybe Roger's son Big Boy R.D. and all the NN girls.

Those NN's are some nice bird's that handle heat well. Too bad no one has figured out how to develop them into an auto-sexing breed yet. It would make it so much easier then having to grow them out. It is easier however to be able to see the waddle growth in the chick's earlier though, without all of that neck feathering in the way.

Wouldn't you simply use a barred rock or cuckoo marans hen? Since the NN gene is dominant. Or do all the hidden color genes in the NN make that difficult?

I'm not sure, as the NN's have been being mixed with just about everything else now. It would be interesting to see if someone could do it though.

The “quail cups” mentioned on the post you quoted are big enough for chickens but would work with quail. Here’s a pic for size. There are two types though. One has a yellow lever thing in it the birds have to peck. There’s another type that’s on a lever and when the cup is empty it automatically fills. I think I read that rent a hen offers the lever type that the birds don’t have to peck. I’m trying both options to see how they work out. Then all you need to do is put a big chunk of ice in the bucket to cool the water.

IDK enough about color and dominant genes etc. I do have 2 cukoo maran hens (except IDK which ones they are since they are in with the Barred Hollands - they look so much alike to me). I also have a white NN roo - not sure if that would help or not since my lack of genetic knowledge/research.

EDIT-- Now I'm thinking I'll just try it - White NN Roo with Cukoo Maran and Barred Holland hens and just hatch the dark egg (since the BH lay white eggs). I need to reshuffle some pens anyway as I decide which roos to keep for breeding. These would have to be bread and hatched later since they are in with another BH Roo right now.

I was about to suggest that since Maran's are supposed to lay brown egg's, and the Barred Holland's lay white egg's.

Edit: Is there a difference in the color of the leg's between those 2 breed's?

EDIT [Probably - I can't remember - Yes, CM Pinkish White legs, BH Yellow Legs]-but if I only hatch one color egg or only have a few NN mixed in the hatch then I know what I have in the end without banding or toe punching to mark them.

I'm also thinking a barred gene is a barred gene so wouldn't that show up with either the Cukoo Maran or Barred Holland?

It should, and then you could keep a barred NN male to breed back to your barred hen's when he's old enough. See what work's out the best for you.

The Fly Predator's that I ordered off of Amazon just arrived here today. I'll hang the bag's of them up later on when the sun is about to go down behind the mountain in the distance, then wait for them to hatch.
