Arizona Chickens

You can see where there is some barring from the Bielefelder dad in the 2 chick's from the Naked Neck hen. The Bielefelder/NN cockerel has a good sized bib going on there.
Yes - they have some good coloring from both dad and mom. I can tell the temperament on the crossed chicks is way more feisty than the pure Bielefelders when I pick them up. I've never had a more calm set of chicks than these Bielefelders - amazing! And you know I love bibbed NN!

Yes, the Bielefelder's are pretty calm. If the full feathered Bielefelder/NN is a pullet, you could breed her to that full Bielefelder rooster.

Looks like that pullet I was keeping an eye on decided to use the nestbox after all. :yesss: The pale blue egg is from her -- her 1st egg! :wee

Until today, all my eggs have been from my 2 Novogens (pictured in my avatar).

You'll be having omelet's for breakfast before long!

My Mom said Wal-Mart in West Valley had 18 eggs for $9! If this is the new norm, I'm soo happy I have chickens! (Well... actually... I'd say I'm happy to have chickens regardless of the price of eggs, lol.)
:eek:I’m on the west and haven’t seen those prices at walmart in my area, but I haven’t looked tbh. That’s insane.

You do have to figure in the cost of feed, but I can’t imagine it would be that high per dozen for your own eggs.

For those of you who live in hotter parts of AZ, do you find your nest boxes get hot/stuffy in the summer if they have curtains? Do hens not want to use them in the summer, or does it not matter to them?

Our (planned) nest boxes are outside the coop, on the north side, under a shade panel, but otherwise exposed. I'm wondering if we should add vents or something to let the hot air escape.

I have a lid/roof on one set of nest boxes that I moved from Mesa - I can prop it open a bit with the latch so they get some convection of the heat going out the top.

You have the right idea on positioning it with shade. Also note your actual shade patterns in the summer- I have sun coming from the north during the highest parts of summer during hottest parts of the day (this may or may not happen where you are). This is not what we have been taught but it happens this far south in the US.

Hi everyone! My babies are now fully feathered at 8 weeks. 2 questions:

1. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and put their nesting boxes up in their coop now, or wait until it's closer to when they'll lay eggs? They all roost high up at night. I don't know if they would start sleeping in the nest boxes if I put them in now...?
2. What are the benefits of having a rooster if you do not plan on hatching or breeding at all? Should we still have a rooster, or do we not need one if we just want eggs to eat?

I love having my ladies. First chickens for us and they are so fun to watch. Thank you guys for helping me get started and answering my questions. You guys are the best!
