My location on craigslist is always 35th ave and Deer Valley Rd. If anyone would like my number to call please feel free to PM me here on byc. I know that there are a few people here on byc that post on craigslist. I really don't know where I fall at on the map because I am not in glendale proper and all my services are city of phoenix. Heck just two streets over the addresses are Phoenix and mine is Glendale. Someone once told me it had to do with water or mineral rights.

LOL i just don't consider myself to be in Glendale til the street lights turn yellow

I will post pictures of the coop when it is a little further along.

Last night I took pictures of the DH and neighbor mixing concrete and putting in the border last night; but all you really see is two sweaty guys giving me and the babies dirty looks.

There is a really nice pic of my 3-year-old mooning the neighbor through the door, who has that "I am not letting him date my daughter in 12 years" look on his face.

But I digress. I will post pics so everone can give comments/advice for modifications.

Hi Harry's Pollos 1G,
Can you post some pictures of your waterer? I would appreciate it.

Harry's Pollos 1G :

Dede, thanks for the links. The best advice I found was that in order to make the waterer work you need to some how create pressure in the bucket so the water will not continuously flow out. I went to Home Depot and got a 2 gallon bucket (white) with lid in the paint department and bolted that to a potting plant bottom. I put 1 hole at about the height of the dish. When you feel the bucket, simply put your finger over the hole so water does not run out. Once you get the lid secured you can remove your finger and the water will flow out to just below the drilled hole. It will then work much like the mini waters we use for the chicks and provide continuous water till the water goes below the drilled hole. I've also found that if I want the base brimming I can lift the lid slightly off and let some water out without completely losing all of the pressure. Once the water arrives to where I want it, I secure the lid again and the pressure is still sufficient to work in the same manner as described previously.

Recently I have been filling the bucket half full and filling it the rest with ice so as to keep the water cool pretty much all day. Plus I leave the waterer on the ground and the girls lay around it to stay cool. I have also been freezing milk gallons and putting out in the coop for the girls to sit next to. They seem to love the idea!!!

If anybody wants pictures of the waterer let me know and I can post them or send them to you in a PM. Good luck and have a great night!

Update: I keep Mr. Peep because I got him, his mother (Dollie) and his Father (Willy) when Mr. Peep was 1 day old. Dollie got killed by a borrowed hen (Cheeks) from the neighbor I gave Big Red to. Cheeks tried to get Mr. Peep, Dollie jumped on Cheeks and the fight started, Cheeks broke Dollie's neck, she was lots bigger than Dollie. Any how I just had Mr. Peep. I had to bring him into the house and set up a brooder. In the mean time he got carried around lots and he did get spoiled.

. He has grown up to be gorgeous, also he was the smallest of all the others and the toughest. ( I thought that was so cute). I did not want to give up Willy as he is so sweet and also very handsome. Big Red was really big and one of the better looking RIR Rooster that I have seen. He could have won a contest. The neighbor, got his hen back. I decided I could buy store eggs until my girls started to lay. My neighbor fell in love with Big Red and wanted him for his 30 hens. I thought that he would have him in a separate place for awhile. I guess he did not think that day. Well, I just could not give up Mr. Peep. Putting him in time out for a couple of weeks settled him down. He still likes to chase Willy when his girls get close. Willy has 2 girls that are allowed to go in his area. I think they are getting it worked out.

Hmmmm..... Seeing the pictures of cinnamon queens I think I was given incorrect information of what I was buying.

See 4 of my six hens. The only one with white on the back side is my long haired chihuahua.

I do not care really, I love them no matter what breed they are. Even if they are not making breakfast for me yet!

Sorry, I do not know how to resize the pic to make it smaller for the forum!!!!!!

Thank you. Bear, the long haired chihuahua, does not stay outside very long at a time. He loves going out to feed all the animals and then if I am not irrigating the garden he heads to the house to the A/C. If I am irrigating he goes and lays in the water and plays.
He and the birds do great together. They have liked him ever since we brought them home and he loves going in to feed and water and see what they are getting for snacks.

If I am doing something that is going to excite the girls I tell Bear to "load up". (That means get in the golf cart and wait for me.) He watches from there. If the girls happen to get out the gate he will lead them back to the gate and into the pen.
The hen in front of him "Flo" tries to play with him but when he barks she runs and he does not understand what he did wrong. She follows him all over the pen and comes to me to be petted. She is my dominate hen. Suprisingly none of the hens or the guineas are afraid of him.

Greetings fellow AZ'ers ~

My wife and I have been discussing getting a handful of chickens and settled on building a coop / run this fall. Well, our timetable may have moved up because one of our cats brought us a new baby chick this morning. We have no idea where he got it so the baby peep is set up with food, water and a heat lamp in a big plastic storage tub in the bathroom. We plan on getting her a companion or two to keep her company. At least, I hope its a her.

We live in the Sunburst Farms area in NW Phoenix and have an acre of space. We've got two gardens but one of them may be converted to the winter chicken run. We're still discussing it. Glad to know there's a few other AZ chickenners on hear to bounce ideas off of and get some new tips.

I am sure this has been asked already, but there are well past 100 pages in this thread. Bear with me then...

2 questions:

1) Best chicken breed for the Valley of the Sun (greater Phoenix area) I hear the 'Sex Link' is a very hearty breed, but new to this.

2) Anyone know of anywhere I can buy chickens that are ready to lay rather than chicks?

Thank you.

Pratt's is the best place to bring diseases into your flock. Very nasty place. They have no standards there and biosecurity is unheard of at that place. A lot of people take their old and sick birds there because that store will pay you money for just about anything. Sorry didn't mean to get on a soapbox but save yourself the heartache and skip Pratt's. There are quite a few very reputable feed stores in the valley that you can get good healthy birds from if you don't want to get them from a private breeder/raiser.

Edited to say: This is the one and only time that I will post about that place and you won't ever hear me bad mouthing anyone for anything except Pratt's. It is just sad what they will do to make a buck.
