Arizona Chickens

That was some storm. We spent almost an hour standing in 10" of water and mud, holding onto tarps, trying to keep rain out of the coop. It's in the most protected part of the yard, a corner sheltered by a brick wall, two buildings and a tree, and it was still hit pretty hard.

The poor chickens. This was their first storm and they cowered in a big pile in one corner, terrified by all the noise and chaos and water. They almost crushed the four at the bottom of the pile including our smallest pullet, Snow. I risked escapees by opening a door to move them off the bottom ones. They all seem okay now.

Tomorrow I'll have to build something else predator-proof for them to live in for a few days while I clean out the soaked shavings and dry everything out and repair the damage. My roommate is going out of town so I'll have to do that on my own.

Also I think one of our beautiful golden EEs is a cockerel. 😟

Being SUMMER,,,,, we consume much watermelon. I take all the green remains of the melon,,, and grind that up in a designated meat grinder I have just for the chickens purpose.
In no time,,, all is consumed.
I will post a picture of my setup next time I do it.
As promised.
I also had some other veggie scraps, that I ground down with the watermelon rinds.
Chickens munched it up.:drool:drool:drool

I’m here in Vail and we didn’t get very much rain.

I was wondering if y’all can help me!? I adopted 6 hens and 5 out of the 6 had bald spots. Ive had them since November 23, I thought it was molting, it’s not, I’ve treated them for mites lice etc and ivermectin for parasites. Still not doing any better! I have 3 losing weight & going bald. My husband says they are pecking feathers out from themselves. They have plenty of room around here free range.
I feed them that $70 bag of expensive scratch and peck layer feed and kalmbauch henhouse reserve.
They don’t like pellets and not a fan of crumbles.

Should I just stop feeding them their feed and give them crumbles and pray by the 4th day they are eating it??? I usually give in by day 2 of them not eating! I also feel bad because I have them mixed with my previous healthy flock and they don’t have this problem of loss of feathers!!! Ughh

Any advice?

I never liked scratch n peck and my chickens didn’t either; add a little of the Kalmbach to their scratch n peck each day. Start with 1/4, then half, then 3/4. And then nothing but the Kalmbach. Don’t give them more food until the Kalmbach is gone, they’ll eat it when they’re hungry enough. You can add a few meal worms or some grubs for extra protein also. Limit treats to about a tablespoon per bird per day.
