Arizona Chickens

Any AZ chicken people out there? I am looking for some advice on raising chicks in the desert. I'm in Mesa. Does it get too hot out here? I have four 20 day old chicks, 3 Buff Orps and 1 leghorn. Do we need to do anything special here
Start with a 5 gallon bucket waterer, with the little drinker cups, with a big chunk of ice. I use a rubber wear container, fill it with water, freeze it and then put it in their bucket. Also I have one of those small totes. I put bricks with ice and it keeps them cool. It's like an ice bath for their feet. They'll stand on the bricks to keep cool. Also I put vegetables in a block of ice and put it on the tote lid and let them Peck at it all day. Chickens use their feet to cool off. My girls also like lettuce. I have a container that I hang it in and they eat off of it all day long.

I noticed that you are new here. Welcome to the Arizona thread!

6 of the 9 Brown Leghorn's that made it to lockdown have hatched. A 7th one pipped on the bottom of the egg and it looks like it downed in it's own fluids. 5 of those 6 have dried off and have been moved down into the brooder. 2 more egg's in the incubator on a wait and see thing. The incubator with the Silver Leghorn's is in lockdown now.

40 more shipped hatching egg's are to arrive on Thursday. These will also be non-white Leghorn's.

7 of the Silver Leghorn chick's hatched today. I'm glad that the storm knocking out the electricity last night didn't seem to effect that hatch.

Now both of those incubators are ready for the new hatching egg's that arrived. They are more Leghorn's, but in different colors. No whites, but it looks like 3 of them are marked with an EX, so that might mean those exchequer ones.
