Arizona Chickens

Bud-where are you where it is illegal to have a rooster specifically? Phx city ordinance says you can't have a male poultry that has the vocal capabilities which disturb the neighbors....it is a noise ordinance, so as long as no one complains, it is still legal. (Key word being "disturb". The rule would apply for parakeets, quail, that stupid turkey my neighbor refuses to keep in her yard....

It is one of those "gray" rules.

I live in Yuma. The rule is related to NOISE, so he said that you can have a rooster, as long as there are no complaints, OR, it has had its vocal cords disabled. This is as explained to me by animal control. I asked if people get that done, and he emphatically said, "Oh YES!" Honestly, I would have Roosters if I can get oen that has had its vocal cords disabled. I don't know what that entails, but it sounds expensive...

But then again, I have completed my surgery rotation, AND I just finished me last day of my elective rotation in, you guessed it, surgery. I figure if I can operate on a human, I ought to be able to do a chicken... Anyone know how to pull that one off?

Ironically, the animal control guy was blocking my driveway as I was pulling up and moved to allow me to park. He ended up parking in front of a neighbor's house that owns roosters, and the guy on the other street has roosters also. They crow all of the time and I love to hear it since it is a few houses down. I don't like it in my backyard near my bedroom window! They didn't crow once while the animal control guys did their business with a differnt neighbor. I was very proud of them!

There are very few vets around phoenix that will even offer decrowing a roo. It can be done but the thing is you can't anesthetize a chicken to my knowledge so anything you do to them you have to do while they are feeling everything. I personally think after what I have seen, chickens don't feel things like we do but I have no proof of that or anything to back it up other than the fact that you can do crop surgery or even worse bumblefoot surgery and a few minutes after you get done they are up and acting like nothing ever happened. I have been TOLD that decrowing a rooster only holds a 50% survival rate. I once saw a diagram of exactly how it is done but there is no way I would even attempt it. Seems like to me it could be done through the mouth but that is not how they do it. They go in from the side through the base of the neck area. I am no vet so I don't know all the fancy terms for what they actually do. Oh and just so you know the last price I heard of for a decrowing started at 180.00 for just the procedure, not including any meds or the actual visit.

I had thought about doing this for a while because I really would like a rooster. I would imagine that survivability rates would be higher but I can understand why it would be less if a vet did it. Surgery of any type is complicated and there is a certain factor of how fast a vet is trying to move in order to make money. I bet you $50 they wouldn't cut as fast if it was a human patient!

I actually know how to do this on a human since this is a complication doing a thyroidectomy and strict measures are adhered to to ensure that it doesn't happen. OTOH, I am certain that chickens generate sound by a different method so an entirely different technique would be needed. Even if someone had a diagram, The amature home surgeon would have difficulty differentiating the vien from the arteries, and those from the nerves. In real life, tissue isn't red and blue like in High School and the dissection of fetal pigs.

Anyway, if there was a way you could help me find the text on this it would be much appreciated. I would at least like to investigate it and I can make a decision as to its feasibility. And if I can't do it myself, $180 isn't that much money and I would pay it. I just don't want to pay it and be out a dead rooster.

I searched for almost an hour last night for the picture that I was referring to and I just can't find it but your right it is different. In the roosters there is a very small triangular bony piece at the base of their throat and I do remember them saying something about having to sever that little piece. Again I have no vet experience and I would not even feel comfortable assisting in this procedure because I don't know enough about it. I did find the vet's name here in Phoenix. I have never dealt with them but I thought you might want the info. I did call it this morning just to see if it was a valid phone number and confirm that this Dr actually works there. Surprisingly enough they actually answered the phone on this wonderful Thanksgiving. This is copy/pasted from the source in which I got it.

Happy Thanksgiving.

We are taking green salad and candied yams to the feast at my brothers place in Paradise Valley.

I've got the yams ready to boil, the cutting board ready to go, the casserole dish sprayed with pam... I'll get busy and get it done in another hour.

Sad day

2 of my new hens got out while we were not at home and my dog got to them. I tightened up security on the coop and run so that won't be happening again, but now I get to get more chickens!

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Ours was nice, if weird. Both my husband and I are divorced kids, and the DH got it into his head to invite ALL sets of grandparents over. It went fine...but I was bushed after cooking, cleaning, planning, etc. I was giving the kids tubby time, and DH was washing the last dishes (the only set he'd done) complaing about his back/feet. When we finally sat down, he looks at me all exasperated and says,

"Whoo! Lets not do that again!"

uh huh.
