Arizona Chickens

Yes you are very far!! Distance is part of the reason I didn't get more hens from Nessa

People in Glendale can't possibly be the only ones with chickens!!!

There has to be more people on the east side with chickens (more farmland?)- When I sold my light brahma roo, all 3 phone calls I received on his ad (including his new owner) were on the east side of town - new owner was from Maricopa. But... I wouldn't travel across town for regular chickens. His new owner had all light brahma hens and needed a roo (had just lost his). Light brahmas aren't very common here.

I don't understand it either. It amazes me where some of the people come from to buy birds. I have had people come from Queek Creek, Gilbert, Maricopa, Nogales, a few from Prescott, heck one guy even drove from Yuma. I don't get it

I mean I appreciate it and all but why don't people in other parts of Arizona have chickens? I have very few people from my area come here. Seems like most are all far I mean FAR away. I had one lady that was willing to drive from Vegas if I had true ameraucanas but that I can kinda understand. Most everything I raise is just everyday ordinary backyard egg layers. You would think I had Onagadoris or some strange elusive breeds.

Edited to say: I wanted to add that the Phoenix inspector told me that some of the ordinances for chickens had changed. He didn't tell me specifically what had changed. All he told me was I was okay. I have no idea where to find out but I think it has something to do with the number of birds and roosters. He said since only 13 of my birds live here forever and I don't have any roos then it didn't apply to me. He also said that some of the written neighbor agreements had to be worded a certain way now. He did tell me something that kinda shocked me and that was that chickens are no longer a civil matter if you are ticketed. IT IS CRIMINAL!!!! So if you get cited in the city of phoenix for chickens you get to go to criminal court. He said that they were working to have this changed but so far no dice.

CRIMINAL!?! That's just ridiculous!

I'm in Queen Creek and they are OK with chickens, it's the HOA that I have to worry about. The CC&Rs state that only "domesticated animals" are permitted. It's a grey area - it does not list any specific animal breeds. That is why I'm so concerned with having "nice" chickens. If I ever had to prove that mine are domesticated, it would be difficult to do with the birds I have now. I need really friendly sit-on-your-lap and come to you when you come outside birds.

The inspector was out here yesterday because some idiot two streets over decided to get stupid. The reason he got stupid had nothing to do with my property and I won't get into the long long story because it is really not relevant. He called and said that I had over 100 roosters on this property crowing at all hours of the day and night. Now for any of you that have been to my place you already know I don't have roosters. I have had conversations with this particular inspector in the past and he is a really awesome guy. So I was not upset by his visit and he already knew that it was a false report but since the report was made he was required to come out. He walked through joked around a bit with me and asked about a few breeds that he had never seen. He said all was well and that I had nothing to fret over and that he would be closing the case report. Oh and just a little FYI I did point out the two cockerals that are here. One is an EE and the other is a gold sex link. Neither of which are even close to crowing age. If I don't sell them or rehome them by the time they do crow they will go up to the feed store and be sold there. As I have always done for as long as I have been raising them.

Laree~ The info you have is probably correct. I was just giving the info that had been given to me. As for the criminal charges thing well I don't see where it would hold up unless you were letting your chickens run wild through a neighborhood or you were just being the ultimate jerk about it or something. Personally I don't think it is anything to worry over for anyone but I found it quite shocking that they would consider something as small as chickens to be a criminal offense. I mean good grief I have never heard of anyone being pecked to death or mutilated by a chicken

When we sold all those baby easter eggers for the church project, we had one person come from the east side of town (I forget where, but it was far), the other buyer was all the way from Casa Grande.

We're not allowed to have roosters in my neighborhood, but I'm always hearing crowing from more than 1 rooster at a neighbor's house a few houses down. I guess no one has complained. The crowing doesn't don't bother me, actually makes me feel like I live in the country.

Here's a question for you chicken experts.

We purchased a polish crested (Cruella) sometime ago, and about 2 months ago she laid white eggs for 4 days.

Since then, nothing!

She is well fed, in good health, gets alot of attention (since she can't see well, we pick her up alot, and she's cool with it).

Any ideas? We can't find any spot she might be secretly laying in, and she never wanders far from the coop anyway.

I've heard that the stress of moving to a new home can stop hens from laying for while (even though you are nice to her, she's got to fit in with the new hens and that is stressful). One of my barnevelders still hasn't started laying since she last went broody - months ago.

Or..... like you mentioned - there is the possibility that she found a secret place to hide her eggs. I had a friend who swore he had checked the entire yard for eggs and that his leghorn was not laying - he finally discovered her stash - 21 eggs!

Well I just got home and they seem to be going just as planned have 2 pips and some rockers will know more in a couple of hours I think 1 is zipping but its hard to see in my new bator Mr. Dickey said dont get plexi door so i did not.

It is molting season so that could be a factor. My polish is not a good layer but her personality makes up for it big time. I recently saw where another friend posted about polish not laying. I am starting to think that they are just not the greatest layers. I am curious to see what happens in the spring though.
