Arizona Chickens

It has been quite an exciting and stressful time around here. Thank goodness all the chickens are good. Yesterday morning Mark (hubby) got his hand sucked into a 28 ton log splitter and needless to say fingers and 28 ton log splitters don't get along very well. 37 sutures, antibiotics, tetnus shot, and pain meds were on the menu yesterday. David (son) went to the dentist today. We got 1 filling, 4 sealants, and a stainless steel crown. So today the menu has two very irritated family members. I escaped to the turkey pen for a bit. The girls always seem to make things better for me. I wish I could only care about what part of the sky the next piece of bread is going to fall out of. All in all I suppose I should count my blessings. This could have been a whole lot worse for Mark. He could have lost his whole arm or hand. David will be fine too. Heck he went on my daily walk with me so he must not be too uncomfortable.

I hope everyone else is doing good and enjoying the great weather.

That's right - I remember you too. I'm glad you found your rooster. You would have been waiting quite a while for mine to get that big.

We can't have roosters here and I was so dissapointed that my only brahma was a roo - he was so sweet & friendly and I had really wanted a light brahma. He was hatched from eggs I bought online (first time we ever hatched eggs) and his was the only brahma egg that hatched.

I am thrilled because 2 months ago when we got some new chicks, I found another light brahma at the feed store (they only had one left). This one is a girl! She's also very sweet - the only new chick we have that seems to be a lap chicken.

This is the only pic I have of her - was trying to take pics of the frizzle. I put the frizzle on my knee and of course two more chicks had to jump up and join him

She is pretty! Good luck with her. We have a flock of Light Brahma's so if you ever want more just let me know:) pullet that is. What breed is the other pullet in the picture? not the frizzle but the red & blue chicken? We also have Lemon Blue Cochins and it looks similar.

Nessa - Oh dear. What a lot of trials. Especially for your husband. I hope his hand heals up well. It sound like he lost some fingers. I am so sorry. You are a wonderful example of looking on the bright side. I am glad your birds are a comfort to you and glad to hear you went on your walk. I heard once that one key to great health was excercise every day, even in a tornado. I can see that you are taking your excercise seriously. I am excited for you on that part. Oh, but what a hard thing for your family to have your husband so injured. Sending warm thoughts and prayers your way...

Mahalo - looking forward to seeing the pictures. Glad things went well on your hatch.

Nessa- Oh no! I hope he your hubby feels better soon, and the damage isn't too terrible. My stepdads were a mechanic and a butcher, respectively---so I feel you! He'll need lots of pampering and some spicy green tomato soup.

Well- I am on day 16 of my hatch, and the temps were 97.8 and 98 this morning. So I EVERSOSLIGHTLY tweaked ita bit higher. Since I had to leave for work ar 530am, I left multiple notes for the DH to check the temps before he left (630am). I taped them to his phone, keys, the baby's shoes, and texted him. This is not his first rodeo, but I wanted to make sure he didn't forget.

So he calls at 730, while dropping the boys off, and says "101.8 and 103".

"Did you turn the temp down, or at least open it for a second to cool it off?"

"uhh, no, was I supposed to?"

MMAAAAACCCCKKKKKK! Fried eggies! Seriously!?? This is not his first hatch. WHY would I ask him to do something so silly if there was no if/then action required?! He must be super-tired this morning. Nessa-your hubby has a free pass today. Mine is busted!

Thankfully, we have a guest who was still in the house. He used to raise chickens, so he is checking the incubator today.

Good thing for house guests huh? I'm on day 17 for my one, (maybe two-fingers crossed) mottled cochin eggs; how exciting

She's actually an easter egger. All 7 of my adult EE pullets & hens that I bought from the feedstore (sold as aruacanas) are typical brown/partridge type pattern (pretty, but not unique). When we purchased 25 EEs from MPC, I pulled out some of the unusual colored ones so that we can add more variety to my flock. We have grey/white, black/gold, reddish brown/white, the chick you saw, and even a splash EE.

Networking is my SUPERPOWER!!!

I went to the plant nursery during my lunchbreak. I happened to hear 2 people talking about chickens---you can guess how that went. Anyway, made new friends, talked to a lady who is on tomorrow's coop tour, and was encouraged to visit them on Rentahen.com

Teeny weeny world.

EDITED: The coworker I went to the nursery with is disgusted: only I can go to buy seedlings and end up talking with chicken people.

Thanks guys. Your thoughts and prayers are all very much appreciated. He did not lose any fingers but the one is so mangled up that we are being very careful to do everything we can properly with it because he has type 2 diabetes and it is possible that it could get infected and turn into something even more horrible but we are not going to think that way. It looks really good today...well as good as a frankensteined finger can look. No redness and most of the swelling has gone down. Just trying to keep him from thinking he is superman and going out and trying to do things in the yard. I told him no glove on the planet is going to fix it enough for him to split wood today.

After the 11th I'd be willing to sell a dozen W/BW Ameraucana hatching eggs for $25 a dozen.

These are pure bred and the rooster is potential SQ.
