SO maybe you all know this, but:

I had to go into work this morning, and since we had the kids we garage-saled our way back. There is a neighborhood between Indian School and Thomas, 40th st and 32nd stree, where there are litterally HUNDREDS maybe THOUSANDS of wild chickens running in crazy little flocks. The people there said they don't belong to anyone, and they were tame as could be. Mostly bigger than banty, but I saw some giants too.

I also counted 3 flocks of guinea hens of 25+ members each, and 30 peas...all the peacocks are in full color. I was astounded. One girl said she walks around every morning and collects eggs laid on 3 lawns to sell them.

What was craziest was the chickens appeared REALLY healthy. Lots of hens running around with day-olds, and young roos trying to crow. I wonder where they get their water in the summer?

THe temptation was to chase them down and be their mommy. But I resisted. I may troll the area during my lunch break for the "perfect" addition to the Alohas. Could you imagine the quarantine time/procedures?

Big day today! We had two new layers! Nugget, my BO, laid a nice small brown egg. Unfortunately she recieved no fanfare because my OEGB Violet decided to lay today too---but jumped in the brooder to do it! Patch, the roo, followed her in, chased out all the chicks, and spend 2 hours in there showing her how to do it.

Grrrrrrooooooowwwwwlll buck buck buck buck buck buck bakawk! Grooooooooowwwwwwllll...

It took Violet FOREVER. Even Patch finally got tired of waiting. But

look at the white egg she laid in comparison to Nugget's!

I don't really think it was MY idea but I just couldn't justify paying the ridiculous prices for the fancy feeders at the feed stores and I refuse to use second hand feeders because you just don't know what could potentially be hiding in the crevices waiting to infect your flock. Bleach and elbow grease just don't make it okay for me. Some of the feeders and waterers from the feed stores can run you upwards of sixty bucks. If properly made and placed these bucket feeders work just as well and last just as long.

There are moms that take their toddlers for walks down that street and feed them scratch almost daily. City of Phoenix passed an ordinance that you cannot catch and eat these chickens as they are "Phoenix Heritage" chickens.

When I asked my neighbor if I could have a roo, he said... "Like it would bother me... can't you hear all of the roos to the south of us each morning" It's pretty crazy.

Lots of folks have sprinkler systems...to wash away the POO!... and the chickens eat the wet grass... our neighborhood also gets irrigation every two weeks and puddles will last for a week or more after that on the north side of homes or under trees. Some folks have put in fountains... just for the chickens.
