You never know if they will be crunchy when you bite into them?

You're on the same day I am - day 9 today.

What are you currently trying to candle with? I've heard a lot of people have good results with strong LED maglights.

I tried a couple different methods for candling last summer when my broody was hatching eggs - 1st, I tried an LED flashlight from Home Depot - then an enclosed box with a hole and a bright light inside that DH made for me - they worked, but not near as well as the new cool lite candler I just got from Murray McMurray. I can see much more detail with this light than I ever could with the others, even with my green eggs & the dark brown marans egg.

It's kind of expensive though - ($25 after shipping). You might be able to get it cheaper somewhere else - I had won a Murray McMurray $25 gift certificate here on BYC months ago and never knew what to spend it on until now. My candler was free to me (probably wouldn't have purchased it without the gift certificate), but I do love it.

Where do you live? If you live close by and want to borrow it briefly, I could loan it to you. I'm in Glendale, near 67th Ave & Union Hills.

Carol - your incubator looks great - I wish I could drill holes in mine for more even heating (can't in glass) - my thermometers are all different temps again.

I have a male guinea that is lonely and calling for his girls (that never existed) I really want him to have a good home so if any of you would like him please PM me. He is a couple of years old, healthy, and needs other guineas. When he is with others he doesn't make much noise but omg a lonely guinea never shushes.

Well, I am in Yuma. 67th and Union.... I think that is about 187 miles away.. be there in about 10 minutes.

Actually, I was in phoenix last Tuesday, had to take my license paperwork to the medical boards, I hand delivered it so it couldn't get lost in the mail and plus, I figured if they saw a face, it would be more difficult for them to sit on the paperwork knowing that I was unemployed and starving....

Thanks for the offer though. I am using a Maglite now, shining through a cardboard. WOrks awesome on white eggs, I can see into the future with it. On brown eggs, I get a tad bit of vision, I can tell if it has something in it. For green, I get absolutely nothing. I will get brand new batteries and try again today. If not, I will wait for them to hatch or explode.

Yes - way too far! With your green eggs, as long as you can see that they are dark - you should be able to leave them in.

With my candling attempts last summer, I was still able to weed out the clears on the green eggs by comparing them to the others that were mostly dark - I could see the air sacs at the top. I think with a fresh battery & a very dark room, you should be fine - I did mine in the bathroom that had no windows so that it was COMPLETELY dark.

Our littlest dog spent about an hour locked in the chicken pen before I noticed her trying to get out! She manages to follow me in every once in a while and this time, accidently got locked in. I'm surprised she was trying so hard to escape with all the yummy treats in there - chicken feed, chicken poop, etc

Mahonri - if you look closely behind the dog in the first photo, you can see the ameraucanas. They fit right in and didn't have any trouble being accepted my chickens. We enlarged our daytime chicken run with those green panels so there would be more room for the younger pullets to flee during integration this week and we just plain needed a larger run now that we have 20 chickens.

I wish it wasn't so tall, Id take it in a heart beat!
The neighborhood rules about structures and objects being see able over the 6 foot wall are not strict but I need to be thinking of those around me.

Hi everyone,

We lost one of our long-time residents of the Hot Wings Stable, tonight. She was a red sexlink, named Reba, who was one of our 1st laying hens. She was just over 3 years old, and has been dealing with ascites for the past few weeks. I've drained her a couple of times, and she started doing better. However, she started retaining water again, and tonight, when I was draining her, she passed away. The only consolation is that I was holding her, and my DS was with us, too.

Well, I just wanted to share my sad news with those who would understand that we sometimes get attached to our hens.

Hopefully, next time I will have better news to share.

Angie
