Guess What! My LF Cochin hen just went broody!
Her she is...

She has no eggs under her, but I have an order from Ideal being shipped on March 10th. They should arrive about 2 days later and that is 22 days if I let her sit on some golf balls. Then I can switch the golf balls and put chicks under her, what do you think?

Also because my kids have been out collecting eggs I didnt realize that my bantam cochin hen started laying. Im pretty sure its her anyway (I checked the only egg that is a little different from the rest of the ones that are normally collected and it is fertile)

So she is in her own cage with the roo and hopefully she will lay lots of eggs and then go broody on them.

Wish me luck!

Our broody was on our hens' eggs until my shipped eggs came. It was about 10 days or so. When they came, I just lifted her, took her eggs, put the shipped eggs under her and put her back. She never skipped a beat. The only thing is that she had lost a lot of weight by the time they were finally born. I would put food and water within reach for her so she can keep her strength up. That will be a LONG incubation for her.

And you want to wait for Ideal? you could cancel you know

I have lots of fertile eggs... that wouldn't be expensive as pure breds if you don't mind getting some EE mutts.

I have no idea what most of those acronyms mean. Ah, sorry, I am pretty dense.
None of those sounds like Silkie acronyms though?

Find a BYCer with a pretty avatar, and ask them to send you a few. It will save you $$ and get you better, heathier stock.

I got my sizzles from someone here. Cammy sent me my blue silkie eggs as "extras" for my australorp order.

I have millie de fleur cochin eggs coming from onthespot tomorrow.

PLEASE let us snob you up a little. Don't go slumming for hatching eggs!

Is there any place on BYC that has all of the chicken breed acronyms listed? I have figured out a lot of them, but it would help to have an acronym glossary.

There is a glossary somewhere... I will see if I can find it!

Red-I shoulda made sure there was a smiley in my last post. There is nothing wrong with Ideal. I hear they do good business! I am certianly NOT offended

I was just trying to support the small guy, as well as share my AWESOME experiences with everyone here. If you don't want or need show quality, Ideal is fine, but you may not get "great" or "breath taking" stock.

If you poke around here long enough, you will find folks who want testers for their show quality eggs, and will send them to you for shipping costs.

Benefits: Cheaper, better stock, and you can order as few or as many as you want. Lots of the afficianados here have MANY breeds, so you can get great variety from one person.

Cons: You may have to wait until spring. Lots of folks here live where it is cold, and their flocks aren't laying.
