Good for you all, the DH just called to report BOTH OEGBs are sitting tight in the Eggplant, as well as an EE. Unfortunately, the EE lays the biggest eggs we have
(blue egg in pic above)
So we went from 8-9 eggs a day to 5.
AND the silly birds are taking up 3 out of 4 nesting boxes. SERIOUSLY, ladies?
Oh well. I had picked this up Friday, to possibly use as a nesting box--someday in the future. Looks like I will be modifying it NOW.
I will keep you updated on chickie availability.
Tofu- I will risk a pecking to make sure you get those eggs I promised.
Edited: They were flighty, up until they started laying. Now they snuggle with the best of them.
Thanks for the information. Im hearing some either settle down or go coo coo. Yes, Im so greedy beyond belief!
Good luck with your nest boxes, quite the work you have there. Your just making me so excited to paint up my own coop.
I was thinking of painting some lovely Phoenixes on the coop sides. Classic roosters.
I wonder what kind of personality they have...
Nasty as hell Im sure. All pretty and stuck up.
wear gloves...they save my hands all the time...I just caught 2 adult guineas with a net and wearing gloves. I can through it without a scratch..if I didn't have the gloves it would have been different
Well I need to be outside...draining the lower part of one of the coops, it have been raining/snowing all day...........the sun is out so should I be
EH. I'd rather have a chicken that doesn't try to kill me.
Just came back with the wood coop after visiting a friend who has chickens too.
I'm not sure what kind but one of his hens is so cute. When we walked into the gate she came scrambling across the fields to say hi.
She followed us everywhere even though we threw some food. Very cuddly.
He also has a little black polish. Pretty dang funny to pet.
I'm going to buy paint tomorrow, any recommended brands and types?

They have a new policy that my dog must have ALL his vaccinations. I had skipped a couple because the doc said they were optional and probably not necessary, and now they are requiring them for grooming. My dog had a grand mal seizure a couple of weeks ago and I told them that I am not willing to do anything to him right now and that I am not worried about kennel cough! But they won't budge. I am really bummed because the groomer was wonderful! She was really good with him and always got all the hair out of his ears.
Henry is an 82lb labradoodle. He is our baby and he is awsome! So I am in the market for a groomer. I have been to a few bad ones, so I know it isn't going to be a pleasant transition. Just like hair dressers, the good ones are hard to find.

My broody did her job well about 6 weeks after she started laying. I was a little worried since I had her on my expensive shipped eggs, but she was great! I did have her in a pen by herself, though. And several folks said I shouldn't trust a newbie, but she did a great job.
These not-so-smart birds do have great instincts! Good luck! If you need takers on the chicks, I am here!!
Well... I discovered my hygrometer really is off 10%, so even though I was trying to do a dry hatch at 30-35%, I ended up incubating them at 40-45% humidity for the first 2 1/2 weeks. I'm hoping that didn't harm them. Tomorrow is lockdown and I was aiming for 65% (55% on my hygrometer).
Mahonri - do you think I should still keep them at 65% the last few days or maybe 60% since I kept them wetter than needed the first 17 days?
Carol - if you haven't calibrated yours yet, make sure you do. I've found that the Walmart hygrometers can easily be 10-15% off.

AZDC - I have a question. If the result of the test was supposed to be 75% and yours read 65% isnt yours under 10% not over? So really you were at 20-25% for the first 2 1/2 weeks, instead of 30-35%? That's how I read it anyways. If it were reading over your test result would have resulted in 85% rather than the expected 75%, right?
I may be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time, just thought I'd ask. I will be testing mine tonight. I have the exact same brands from the exact same place. So I will just expect the same result.
