Arizona Chickens

I find my citrus with holes pecked in it. I heard its bad so I take it away. They dont seem affected so Im not sure the reason that they cant have it.

Citrus is a food source for some kinds of birds. . . Orioles come to mind. . . don't know about chickens, but I doubt it would hurt them.

ANYTHING in large quantities other than the regular feed can be harmful. For example if you drink too much water well you can get water intoxication and die but you get the idea. I often tell people citrus is a no no but if one falls off your tree don't freak out and run to the nearest animal emergency clinic. I have been told and read several times that too much citrus can change the chemical balance in their bodies and cause them to slow in laying. Have I ever given citrus to my flock? YES. but it was only a small amount and not something they get everyday. So all in all as long as you aren't peeling up 20 pounds of citrus a day or a week for your birds you ought to be just fine.

hi all!

my name is benjo. i had a three-chicken flock in my backyard until the recent rains revealed an achilles heal in my poultry fort that one of my dogs exploited

i'm currently looking for two pullets - older than six weeks, ideally around 4-6 months - to add to the family. if anyone has any tips or lovely ladies looking to be re-homed, feel free to drop me a line via e-mail. americaunas are definitely my favorite.

generally speaking, i'm super new to this - my girls all just turned six months, and we got our first eggs on monday (one day after the massacre - how's that for the circle of life?)!

also, their favorite day is brewing day, when i toss my spent brewing grains into their run... i've never seen them gobble something up so quick!

Brewing Day! Mine like "the day after mommy tries to make cheese and miserably fails day"

The dogs like that too.

Edited: None of sommer's eggs hatched. She and I took a long hard look at the "hatching failure guide" to see what the sudden decrease in hatchability could be. I think Sommer said the banty hen went broody, and hatched out 3 of Kona's eggs. WHAT? Stupid chicken.

Anyway, I worked from home today, and could hear the birds outside. I kept running over to the trash can to listen to the dud eggs.

It depends. Soft and Hard cheeses. I have taken a break because I can't find real raw milk. The 4-Hr down the street just started giving me goat milk, but only 2 cups at a time

I love conventions!! Hope you are enjoying yourself! I always eat too much and drink way too much coffee. I gotta have one for each session! Area you still in AZ or somewhere cold?

I am responding to every post this morning. Sorry to dominate the thread. I have to do something to keep myself busy!! I am not a patient person and this waiting-for-eggs-to-hatch is killing me!!

I am imagining that by noon tomorrow you should have your first pip!

Keep us informed.

I even checked out BYC at the Kiosk on the exhibitor's floor today... (this thread anyway)
