Arizona Chickens

I used to have rabbits as child/teenager. My dad secured the backyard and they had free reign with the goose and cats. Cockatiels too. Yeah, yeah. Strangest urban ranch, ever.

I had a manx named Tigger who would try to stalk the rabbits, but they would team up on him. He'd be focused on Skunk to the North and Thumper & Scampy would sneak attack from the West and East. ZOOM thump! Before Tigger could right himself, Cotton would dive bomb from the South.

Not that it helps you any Nessa, but I loved having rabbits too. I don't know if they were giants, but they were pretty large. Well tempered, came when called, and never actually hurt the silly cats.

The lady I sold my CM roo Stumps (now renamed Checkers) keeps rabbits. I could ask her what she has, if you would like.

We found, with our broody last year, that moving them was really tricky. Ours started in a nest box and we wanted to separate her, so set up a nest in a huge dog crate. We put her in there on the eggs, but found her later next to the door of the thing pining away for that nest box. We had to pin her in the nest over night and part of a day before she decided it was okay to stay in there on the eggs. Even then if the gate opened, she would high tail it for that box. It was like the place and not the eggs were calling to her. Strange birds, eh?

Since there are so few birds in our coop, I would like to leave ours in the nest box, but it is 2 feet up from the bottom of the hen house. Little ones would fall to their death! So trying to figure out if we should try to move her or build something for her so she can stay. Hmm.

Right..the place not the eggs!

I left Dozer in her nesting box this time and cut a peice of hardware cloth the same size as the inside of the nesting box. Because of the lip, the hardware cloth fits inside the box just perfect. To make sure another chicken doesn't bonk the cloth inwards from the outside, I put a cinderbock in the nesting box (Dozer's food and water in the block holes) and pulled it towards me, against the wire.

Wow, your nest boxes must be really big to have a cinderblock in there! Ours are only 12x12. Thinking about taking out the dividers and then it would be 12 x 48. Still the issue of the 2 foot drop. The hen needs be able to get out to poop, right? Or are you just letting her poop in there and cleaning it. Our boxes are also too small for the hen to really stand up. Maybe we better move her... darn. I really just want to leave her in the flock.... Must outsmart my hen... Can I do it?

My boxes are made out of base cabinets, so they are big. Dozer only takes up a little teeny space--So plenty of room to broody poo. I was just going to scoop it out when I changed her water every day.

Perspective: When we made the nesting boxes:

Well, I know. And we are lucky, too. We had a great family experience building our hen house from scratch, but currently- you have room for your broody in there and I don't. I hate the idea of moving her and having to separate her. Darn.

Sure- just let my husband finish messing around with them, and you all can have first crack at leftovers. I think I have 17+ office cubicles too... (lets not discuss that one)

Can you find the chick?

All three visable:
