Arizona Chickens

I'm starting to consider raising some Cornish X this fall. My plan would be to get them in late September/October when its cool enough that I can keep them outside. I don't want to raise a ton of birds, especially since I'm going to be 'pasturing' them in my vegetable garden, so that they can dig and fertilize the soil, I figure I only have room for maybe 5 or 6 birds. Plus, I'll be raising them on the sly, since I already have the maximum number of birds the law allows, but I figure that I'm unlikely to get caught with meaties, since they won't be around very long.

Anyway, since I'm raising them for meat, I want to get the best price possible, which means buying 25 chicks. This, clearly, is about 20 more chicks than I want, so, would anyone be interested in going in on an order of meat birds? I'd be willing to order the birds and front the money, and even keep them for a day or two, until they get picked up.

I will be placing an order in the next few months and would realllly like to split an order haha. But not for meat birds though, sorry. If anyone wants to order with or something I'm in. I'd rather go threw Natures Hatchery since they have all the breeds I like but eh...I can make do. I'll pay for shipping if it isn't terrible, I have about $80 or so put away just for this. Splitting an order will make the shipping cheaper anyway.

MEATIES: Count me OUT. However, this guy does it and has a great tractor design: http://omelays.blogspot.com/2008/05/how-to-build-chicken-tractor-cheap.html. I found this link on his BYC thread here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=3465782

SLEEP
: Mohonri & RRR - in never occured to me that anyone else was actually awake in the wee hours this morning.

alohachickens: They are looking good! Congrat's!

NoSkiveez: My favorite shade cloth is aluminet. I learned about it from post 7 on this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=54302. Here is a picture from a vendor: http://www.greenhouses-etc.net/equipment/aluminet.htm. If you want me to track down who I actually bought it from, I can look harder.

HOT WEATHER CHICKENS: I would say MUST HAVES are SHADE and WATER and VENTILLATION ... no locking up in a closed space.

Beckyhsinglsc - Thank you for the bee house instructions. I wanted to build one and didn't have details. Thank you very much.

LareePQG - Wow. Bamboo pheasants. Wow. Thank you for sharing.

SockPuppet - Congrats on a great contest with so many amazing entries. Good luck picking a top winner.

I had this lady call about my chicks that I have for sale. They are three weeks old today.

Weird Lady > "Are the chicks old?"

Me > "They are 3 weeks old today."

Weird Lady > "Have they stopped laying yet?"

Me> "Ma'am, they are babies. They still need a heat lamp at night."

Weird Lady> "So they don't lay eggs?"

Me> "No ma'am they won't be laying til at least August"

Weird Lady> " Well why on earth would anyone want to buy a chicken that don't lay eggs?"

(I freaked out kinda. I am sorry weird lady on the phone that I don't know. Really I am a nice person.)

So I calmly said, "Ma'am God be with you and have a nice day."

(I hung up on her.)

If you are reading this and you were the one that called then please go to the chickens101 section, read thoroughly, and call me back

Well..I already got a call...one of the feed stores had food colored chicks in last week...guess what this week the chick already looks bad....

unwanted easter chicks and ducks make me MAD

Last year a feed store that I won't mention the name of ordered in a couple hundred colored chicks for easter and they didn't ask what the breed was. They ended up being meaties. Talk about sad. You buy the cute easter chick for your kid and sit them down to explain why their pet must become dinner in 8-12 weeks.
