Arizona Chickens

Laree: I think you're right. I have to admit, she looks JUST like an australorp, but she lays green eggs. I have a white leg horn, but she has a few random flecks of dark grey....I think she lays 'cream' colored eggs rather than white.

My chickens came from an organic chicken farm, but were hatched in a kindergarden classroom, it's inevitable they wouldn't have issues

Had a half day at work... thought I should probably use it wisely, so...

Kitchen... clean. And no longer smelling worse than the chicken coop.

Solar panels washed.

Nest boxes hung.

Bushes trimmed.

Weeds wacked... and the battle scar to prove it.

Here are my CM's awesome looking eggs from Wednesday and today. Bummed to have learned today that they won't ALWAYS look that cool, but thank goodness I'm finally getting eggs!!

Here are the girls sunbathing in what USED to be MY garden... clearly I've lost possession.

FYI...

My friend (in Mesa) had this rabbit wander into their yard. Its black and oh so soft. Ive never felt a rabbit so soft. We are thinking its a rex (velveteen). Looked today and found out it is a male. He loves to be petted and sits and closes his eyes when you scratch him. super sweet! I would take him but dont have a place for him. So it would not be fair to this rabbit.

Anyway, they want to find it a good home. If anyone is interested please let me know. If someone is truly interested I can see about getting a pic.

I have 3 day old "Red Cross" sex link and "Golden Comet" sex link chicks for sale. So it would be about 5 months before eggs arrive. PM me if you are interested.

I'm not sure if anyone has heard but the Maricopa County Fair begins (I think!) on April 13 at the Maricopa County Fairgrounds, Phoenix, AZ. Is anyone going? I am so excited to see the livestock and I hope to see some great shows! I plan attending both the Poultry and Rabbit showings and the schedule says these are the show dates but I am a little confused since the fair starts on April 14?

Poultry show is on April 13 at Noon - 8PM
Rabbit show is on April 14 at 7:15AM - 9AM

It cost $8 per anyone older than eight years old, under that it's free. But for April 14 - 15 you can bring in canned food for half off admissions. Parking is $10 per car.

CheerfulHeart2, While rabbits and chickens can live together they MUST be free ranged in order to get away from each other. Otherwise the rabbit may be pecked at and a rabbits kick can easily crush a chicken. There is always the risk of rabbits and chickens eating each others poo too, if enough is eaten both can get sick. I imagine the chickens will be eating of the rabbits poo since it is pelleted.

larryvas, How soon are you wanting to purchase? I live in Chandler and I will be placing an order with Natures Hatchery in about May or June/July. I'll PM you!

It's been a long day.

I was down in the mouth from 7AM to about 1PM.

Did my 65mile round trip feed store tour.

Stock Shop, Feed Barn and skipped Western Ranchman this time. Bought Chick Starter! (Along with shavings, feed, oyster shell, etc...)
Both stores had numerous chicks for sale and the Stock Shop had ducks. I had to smile when a fellow wanted to buy one of their three week old
Delawares. The clerk said, "Well you can't buy just one, they are social animals!" And he said, I can when I'm using it to feed my snake.

Spent an hour cleaning the Church. We usually do it Saturday mornings after the coop is cleaned but we have general conference tomorrow and Sunday.

Spent some time out with the girls free ranging and protecting my garden.

Ate peas out of the pod till I was almost sick. They are SO DELICIOUS!... and I threw the pods into the run.
I've been giving them left over romaine lettuce too and it's made the poops a bit runny.

Good it's coop cleaning day tomorrow.

Some pointy saddle feathers, long tail feathers, and some sparring with my cockerel have got me thinking that one of my pullets is a cockerel... shucks!

That means that I have an EE roo for sale. Any takers? He sure is pretty.

Rough Day at my house today.

First: One of the chicks got a toe stuck in the perf of the door/ramp of the brooder. Fell forward, hung upsidedown, squawked.

Then: the same(?) chick some how kicked the latch up and (HOW?!) punched the hook latch ALL the way through its wing. It freaked out and swung back and forth. I managed to get it out without the wire cutters.

So a few minutes later, I went to check on it, and I noticed Salt (the white Aloha chick) was hanging upside down in the brooder. Her leg had fallen through the roost (the top part of an old grill). She must have freaked out and fallen off. She was still alive, but when I pulled her out her leg was cold and stiff. Hopefully it was just REALLY asleep. I massaged her hip, put her to the water, and then under a heat lamp with lots of food. She was REALLY hungry, and tore after part of a bagel I gave her. After dinner she was trying to walk on it, but not so gracefully. It scares me to think how long she was stuck like that.

ANYWAY: Triple antibiotic for the wing hole, yes?
