Arizona Chickens

Any suggestions on how to show my wife what's involved with raising chickens? I know once she understood she would get all involved. Just not sure how to get her there. Suggestions appericeated

posted from my iPhone so please forgive my fat fingers.

Have you made her hold a chick yet? Take her to the feed store, make her clap her hands and rub them together REALLY fast, so they get warm-hot. Then hand her the cutest chick in the bin. Her warm hands will make the chick fall asleep almost immedately. What woman can resist a sleeping baby making satisfied-love-sleep noises?

(I think I know Mahonri's response...

LOL i don't think that will work. She thinks they are cute just worries about logistics like smell, noises, complication of building coop, amount of work to clean area. Ya know the small stuff

Plus other than the ones at Pratt's she hasn't seen a full grown chicken and highly doubts that they could be nice like a pet... Those are her concerns.

Got the go ahead from the neighbors that will be close to them

Probably will need to share some eggs with them though every now and then.

Forgot to take pictures of the area today. I worked on the honey do list instead

I think that you will just have to get them. She may or may not be won over. My husband hasnt been but he's tolerating my obsession.

I agree. Some folks are just not "bird" people, (not that there is anything wrong with that). Once you make that really cute (and easy to maintain) coop and show her just how useful, easy and fun chickens can be, I bet she will come around. My BF isnt really into the birds... Heck, often he has no idea what birds are even in his own backyard

But, he is amazingly fine with hatching and brooding chicks in the closet, so I think my bird-brain is rubbing off on him

On a related note, he used the word "cloaca" in the proper context tonight. I'm so proud

You need to visit a nice yard with chickens. I am not all in love with the chicks. They are cute for like 3 days. but then they start making dust and pooping and you have to feed them all the time and change their water and blah, blah, blah!

I like my full grown hens (though I only have 2 right now). Our waterer stays clean, our feeder only has to be filled like once every 10 days and we just keep the nest boxes with clean wood chips for the eggs to land in a soft clean bed. When we bring treats, the hens come to us and are sweet. They are so enjoyable to hang with. What's more, they have nice wood bedding and they don't smell. Their coop just mulches nicely and we love to watch them wander the yard when they are free ranging. That is the pleasantry of having chickens. I do so love the crow of a rooster, too, but we don't have a mature rooster right now.

Let her see a nice set up and some nice chickens. There is work involved and busy moms/wives don't need anything extra on their plates. She may warm up to it if it seems worth the effort.

BTW - has she tasted fresh eggs from backyard chickens???

So, I candled just a couple eggs under the broody tonight. She is doing such a great job! Have I mentioned that I

broodies?

She did knock an egg out of the nest yesterday. We found one on the floor of the coop. So, she would have had to lift that out of the next box a full 2 1/2 - 3 inches over the edge. Unless it got stuck on her leg when she came out for a bite to eat, she did that on purpose. Wonder why?? Do they know if it isn't doing well? Those broodies...
