dofnup - sorry you are having a bad day

Sometimes things just stink, and there's just not much that can be done other than take a few deep breaths, say a prayer and keep on truckin' along. I hope your day turns up, you feel better and that you find a home for your silkie roo!

Beetle/Mealworm update:

I checked the bug boxes (eew.. & stinky) and found 7 more 'creatures' had changed to beetles since Friday night....
woot.gif
So that leaves 3 mealworms that may or may not live to make the change to the 'creature,' and about 7 more creatures to make the change to beetles.

So we've got something like 30-35 beetles crawling around in a plastic shoebox with bran and baby carrots (for water). I'm not sure what the next step is as far as encouraging them to do their thing. I'll let you know when I do if you're interested!

dofnup, Im sorry about your day~ Tell your son happy B-day and I hope all the ucky stuff picks up somehow. If I know anyone who wants a rooster I will let you know...

I am seriously considering getting rid of my RIR Oatmeal. She is so close to laying but she is so dang loud. She screeaammmsss when I walk into the coop. Despite handling her everyday she isn't that friendly and heads for the hills.

Sometimes she is as loud as a rooster! I can't give her away until the two chicks I have now grow more, I don't want my EE to be alone. Since she will lay soon what do you think I can sell her for? Or trade her for?

Good afternoon everyone!

Gross happenings today. There were 6ish eggs in the incubator, along with the two remaining turkey eggs. They lock down tomorrow, so I had candled them the other night....

*BAM* the one turkey egg eggsploded ALL over the place. One chicken egg took the full force of it, some were just splashed. I figure all those eggies are pretty much toast now. Just in case, I filled a gallon bag withh 100-degree water, stuck it in a crockpot under a towel, and plopped the eggs in there. THEN I spent an hour and a half scrubbing the incubator, the sink, the tables.....my clothes. STINKY! The house still has a scent...

Once the incubator was clean, I put the eggs back in there. I am guessing they won't hatch, but I have to at least give them a chance

I even rinsed off the messy egg and put it in the faaaaar side of the incubator, on the other side of the water dish.

RRR: How are your chicks doing? Has the Del stopped picking on the Brahma?

Laree: Sorry to hear about the egg-splotion.

My broody is still setting, and seems to be doing well, although now I've started to worry about what I should do if I don't get any chicks. Does anyone have any chicks hatching on the 14th or 15th?

LareePQG - oh no! I'm sorry about the eggs

redrocketrooster - Eggsploders! At least you made it sound funny...

pdx2phx - I'm going to laugh if you grow attached to "the critters" and they become pets!

I gave away one of my four roosters yesterday. I was sad, but it turned out better than I expected. He is being added to a flock of hens that belong to a 12 year old boy. The kid was so excited that he carried the roo home on his lap instead of in the box

Edited to add: I candled the Aloha-mix eggs and all but the BO egg look like they are doing something! They are 3/4 of the way opaque! 11 more days!

The BO egg looks like it just has a yolk or something floating at the top. Should I toss it to avoid an eggsplosion?

I would think that the others could still hatch, I have experienced this before and had the others even with yuck still on them hatch. I bet that it will delay them hatching just a little bit. Broody hens sometimes have something happen to an egg and the others hatch, also the time out of the incubator would be kind of like the power being off in someways except that you put them into a heat source so they really didn't get too cold. I have had the power out completely for 22 hours and still had a great hatch.

I guess what I am saying is don't give up on them....

Sorry about the mess, been there done that my friend

Katherine, No she hasn't stopped. I put up wire barrier between them and it has helped, despite their feelings for the barrier. The Brahma seems to be failing to thrive in general. She's short and squatty but round, her poo is always liquid and she sleeps all the time. Hopefully she'll be fine or maybe she'll be my derp durp chicken.
