Arizona Chickens

I hear you...So far the houses around me have said they are aware of their presence, like watching them and that they aren't loud. I am afraid I will be pushing my luck with the neighbors with Oatmeal now louder than ever. My Father thinks that the HOA might only become involved when the neighbors complain since the coop isn't very visible from over the fence.

Ugh this sucks. When I go near the coop/run the noise erupts. Maybe if I stay out of there and came back after my trip the chicks will be big enough to live in a cage in the run. I mean, Pooky the EE is not nearly as loud as her, are RIR meant to be loud?

My thought on this is that Pooky will have a happier life if she can stay with you ... and if she need to be lonely for a few weeks to do that, that is well worth it. Once the HOA is involved...you may loose your chance to have them. Just a thought. At my house the chicks run with the hens. The hens tolerate a lot from the chicks...but BA's are gentle to start with and they have known the chicks since they were a few days old...and the chicks have mommas to watch over them. Maybe your Dad can go say hi to Pooky every day while your are gone.

Sorry, i wasn't very clear. The whole human family is going, it's a big wedding.

While were gone I have a friend coming over to feed my animals and a house sitter. I'm hoping Oatmeal will keep her squawking down since humans are normally her loud switch. By using the larger feeder and waters I have available I hope to make it so nothing has to be replaced in my absence and siren will be undisturbed. At least that is the plan. I don't think I can take her away becuase Pooky might become just as loud and stressed without me there too.

Sad day today. I came home to find my blue orpington dead in the run, kind of under the brooder ramp. Lots of the hens hang out there in the morning since it is shaded and the chicks toss food down on them.

She was flipped on her back, legs straight out, neck pulled back. She laid an egg today--and did not look sick or anything all weekend. She was a BIG fluffy bird--easily twice the size of my BO. I would guess she weighed more than a gallon of milk---so 10 pounds? The only thing she looked was hot--but we have plenty of shade and lots of waterers.

I am not exactly sure how old she was---I think I brought her home before Christmas, already a few weeks old. She brooded with the chicks hatched 12/7/10. She would have been over the "average" age for Marek's...but I dunno. This is the first death I have had like this...my other losses have always always had some indicator of illness. just this weekend we were discussing how spectacular she was.

Thoughts?

Hi AZ! Haven't posted much on this thread but look on it frequently. I don't know if this is "OUT THERE" lol but was just interested to know what everyone breeds in your backyard flock(s) purebreds and projects. Would love to see pictures

Very sorry about the loss of your hen. Sounds like she may have got to hot.

I know with my giant Cochins we really have to watch them as it starts to heat up and though the summer. All there feathering and being a heavier bird they over heat fast. Last year a few had to stay in the house in crates and I also had to give one a cool bath to bring her temp down when I got home from work one day.

Sounds like a number of you lost birds in the past couple of days.

I have a friend that I sold birds to that has lost 2 in the past two days and I'm fairly certain that one of them was due to Mareks.

I only got 3 eggs today. Must be the heat. Yesterday I turned the AC on in the coop and within a half an hour they had stopped panting. Didn't turn it on today.

It was a LONG day and after work DW and I ran over to the hospice center to say goodbye to one of our dear neighbors. She's 88 years old and her kidney's have failed. They're saying she has between 2 and 5 days to live. I hope it's less for her sake. When I told her I loved her, she said my name and told me she loved me too. After we went back to the house to visit her 91 year old husband. He's doing OK but his eyesight is almost gone so he will need to live with his son and that alone should kill him. We will so miss them as neighbors that we've been so close to for 23 years. He and his daughter asked me to speak at the funeral. It won't be easy.

Time to hit the sac... goodnight everybody.

Hi everyone,

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of people's chickens. We've only lost a few chickens in the past 3 1/2 yrs, and I know how heartbreaking it can be.

On a happier note, I took an extra day off work today, and went up to Mt Lemmon with my 2 DS's. It was soooo nice!

Anyway, back to the grind tomorrow.

Take care, everyone!

Angie

xtremechickens, the pictures you showed were both so fluffy looking~ I love it!

Mahonri, Sorry I don't know what to say other than it's sad but hopefully it wont be painful and harmonious.

a2ms4chickens, I hate Lemmon Mt. It made me throw up all that yummy pizza when I was seven. :C

Greetings!

If you live in the Gilbert area you may want to read the an article in the Az Republic -Gilbert section. Front page "Crying Fowl" .
It seems Gilbert is trying to set new limit on the number of fowl and rodents one may have Some of the proposed regulations -No more then 10 rodents/fowl on lots between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet. Only one rooster 4 months or older for each 20,000 square feet.

Did you know fowl are only allowed in zoning districts SF-8 to SF-43? I found out most developments are S-7 basically lots less then 8000 square feet but if you have a larger lot in a community you are still bound to the S-7 zoning code therefore are not allow to have chickens on your property. [/b]

I try to keep my chickens quiet during the early morning fearing the code compliance dept will make me get rid of my chickens.

The proposal goes to Town Council on Tuesday June 8th and would take effect in 30 days.

The article is not on AZcentral as of now but I will post link when it is online.

Well, my little BO is still doing ok. Thanks to everyone who jumped over there to read my post. She hasn't had another epiode since that day on sunday, but every morning when i go out to the coop I am just crossing my fingers that i don't find dead birds on the floor. Yeasterday I raked their entire run, raked all the poo(as best as i could) out of the sand in the coop, scrubbed the dickens out of the waterers, rechecked everyone for mites/lice, but i wouldn't know what they looked like. Is it ok to just go ahead and use poultry dust on them anyway? i already use DE in the coop, but not everywhere esle. what about worms? are they too young to worm? just being overly cautous now. thanks.

Hello, everyone! Hope all had a great weekend. We had a great time at the lake for 4 days and we are still tired from it this morning.

I had GREAT surprise when we got back home. It was about 9pm when we finalu arrived home from the lake so I ran out to the chicken coop to check on my broody GLW. I had put two of my ducks eggs under her before we got her some fertile silkie eggs. The duckk eggs were due this weekend. I opened the box she is in and lifted her up and there was a little ducky.

The other duck egg was working on its way out she had a crack going around the egg so far. I ran inside and set up a quick brooder for the one duckling. I put it in there and was watching it when my hubby came running in with the other egg from under our GLW that was starting to hatch. He said it is about to hatch and he wanted to watch.

So we watch that little duckling pop out of the shell. Both are doing great so far.

After all of this excitment I ran to where my broody swedish mix Cocoa is to see if the eggs under her had started to hatch. Sure enough I saw some wet little duckling! As far as I can tell right now she has 7 hatched and doing great.

My GLW is still sitting strong on her silkie eggs even though I took away those ducklings.
