Arizona Chickens

so am i to understand that since i have 2 vaccinated chicks and 5 non-vaccinated chicks, i should get the 5 vaccinated now, or is it too late? the 2 vaccinated were quarantined by the friend for 4 weeks and i just got them 2 weeks ago. they are all around 8 weeks, give or take a few days. i don't know what to do. why is this stuff not in all those stupid books?

Final hatch count- 13-EE, 10-WLS, 7-BLRW. EE 100% Hatch, WLS 10/18 and BLRW 7/36. The BLRW I ordered off of Ebay (hatching eggs) 9 of the eggs were too porous. I hatched 4 out of 13 and my friend hatched 3 out of 12, he said many were scrambled. Probably won't ordered hatching eggs off of Ebay anymore, unless it is local pick up. I love them though, so, so cute!!!

There is too much info, that is why we are here!

You should vaccinate them, if you can.

I just went outside, and my avatar Dozer, just hatched an egg. One was pipped under her & peeping, th 3rd (I thought there were only 2?) was still closed. Technically the eggs aren't due until tomorrow

This is her first hatching, second raising this year

SO--because she is out with the other chickens I will have to vaccinate sooner rather than later. Once she is done hatching, I will seperate her, vaccinate the chicks, and then quarantine them for as long as she lets me. (Dozer has a mind of her own)

The one hatched chick of the chicks is a REEEEEAAAAAllllyyyy cool color...I am anxious to get under her and see what egg it came from. Aloha pullet? EE? who knows?!

Oh yeah---I noticed when I was collecting eggs, Dozer's sis is completely bald on her tummy. She's been hanging out in the nesting boxes, so I may just toss my incubators & utilize these girls' skills next year.

Our hatching is all done. 23 chicks. We had 2 try to crack out but never made it out. There was a third that we helped out and it looks like a survivor. We still havent that one in the incubator. We are very excited to have hatched eggs from our own...finally.

For the heat, we have been hosing off the coop. It seems to help. They dig in the wet dirt and lay in it. We want to put in sprinklers but our water sits in a above ground water comes out hot unless its run long enough to clear the hot water from the lines and I think the chickens would be upset if I sprinkled then with hot water a few times a day. I'm going down to get some of that outdoor screen stuff to hang for more shade on the coop.

Saturday we had another snake in the coop. We nearly lost a 8 week old chick. I normally don't look out the window when I hear the chickens but this time I did thankfully. One chick was just screaming and I looked and the snake and chick were rolling all over the coop and the others were squacking up a storm.

My BO hatched all 5 of her SLW eggs this morning! They are all doing great, but I had a question concerning the heat... I know chicks absorb the yolk and don't need to eat or drink for a few days... but is that still true here? In near-100 degree weather? Mama is still sitting on them and hasn't taken them out for a stroll yet (they won't be 24 hours old until tomorrow morning/afternoon) but maybe I should show them all to water even if she doesn't think it's time yet? I'd hate to have happy healthy chicks get dehydrated and die. I imagine that could happen fairly quickly. They are of course in the shade all day, but still-- it's hot!

Laree,

Where do i get them vaccinated at and am i going to have to seperate them from the 2 that are already vaccinated? this is all so confusing. what if i left them alone and did nothing? could i never get anymore chickens until they were all dead(ugh)? honestly? what is the potential harm in having some vaccinated and some not? if i am understanding it correctly, if marek's were to strike, the vaccinated ones wouldn't get sick but the others probably would. but if no one was vaccinated, everyone would be affected and then i would have to vaccinate any new birds i got, right? do you have a mix of vaccinated and non like i do?

Wha????

This doesn't seem right! I know we've barely chatted back and forth since I'm so new, but I've always enjoyed your posts and appreciated your help and insight. This bums me out...will you be back at some point or is this it!?

It was me. It was me and my big mouth that didn't make sense when I posted. I said what I said in jest, because I felt secure in our friendship, and I wound up hurting you. That was SO not my intent, and I would hope and pray that you know me better than that to think I would totally change my mind about you. I am truly, and wholeheartedly, sorry if I hurt you. Which clearly I did.

On the advice of several people on the board, we got one of the small mister kits (the kind that hook up to a hose) and set it up around the top of the coop. It gets the ground a little bit muddy right under the misters, and it gets the chickens kind of wet, but since we started doing it, egg production has gone up, and they seem more comfortable.
