so I just read your last post on the quail. Being that it was found I would assume a gambels quail. I can try and see what I can do.
Send me the details please.

Shaun.

Wish we were closer we probably could take them.

I have been trying to convince hubby that quail are the next thing I want to raise.

Hello Everyone,

Just returned from the White Mountians- so HOT up there!

I am an Arizona native. I have lived in the valley my whole life, and I hate the heat!!! Hate it, I get the "Sunny Blues"

Is it the season for chickens to get sick?? My cousin lost another two, one RIR pullet and a bany cochin chick, both had colds.
Then he lost his BO to a cat, the next day. He has needed to thin his flock. It looks like nature will do it for him.

I have my babies still inside, I am too "chicken" to put them out side. Smells fantastic...really

Happy Tuesday! May a cool breeze blow your way!

Holy cow, we have a fly INFESTATION! But it's not in the coop--it's in the grass!

There are swarms of black flies all over my backyard-- mostly in the shaded grassy areas (which change throughout the day)

Does anybody know how to get rid of them? We do let the chickens free-range on the grass, but although there is bound to be little bits of decaying chickie poo here and there. there aren't piles or anything... and we keep our dog poo picked up! What is going on?!? I do remember this infestation last year (before chickens) so they're not the cause but they may have made it worse.

I'm actually hoping it will get too hot for them eventually, but in the meantime... Please help!

I get the fly predators in the mail every 3 weeks. That works wonders.

I TRIED the fly traps, but the stupd traps stink SOOOOOO BAD. The DH kept thinking the coop stank---then he busted the trap and *SPLOOSH* the stink was all over us.

I read that with the fly predators you have to release them on a pile of compost or poop for them to work, and we don't have anything like that... there aren't any piles anywhere, which is why this is so confusing! Can I just put them in the grass where there are sheets of flies crawling around?

I put them in the pile of scooped chicken poo, and again under the shavings in the coop. Then I put a heavy bucket over them, so the chickens wouldn't disturb them while they "settled in".

I bet you could sprinkle them in the grass at night, & cover the area with a box/rock/trashcan--- or under a bush. I think the idea is shaded & a little bit damp so they can get crackin'.

ETA--this has to be done at night.

We have had a fly problem too. It doesn't help our closest neighbor is a big dairy farm then on top of that we have a lot of chickens. Fly paper is a joke. I hang this fly bag from home depot and they go in and don't come out. It smells like a dead body tho. It helps but attract away from the coop and house. I really hate flies. I worry I will have a bot fly land on me.
