Arizona Chickens

I thought there was no way my dogs and chickens could be together at the same time. This created a problem, however, because the yard is not divided so if the chickens were out the dogs couldn't go out to "do their business".
There was no way everyone was going to put the chickens up when the dogs had to go out and I wanted them to free-range to eat the bugs and weeds.
Then I saw a picture on here (I can't remember who's) with their baby, schnauzer and chickens all in the same picture! That started me thinking that maybe my schnauzers could do it too. So, I tried.
It took awhile but it worked! Now my dogs and chickens actually hang out together in the backyard (with supervision only, of course.)

That was me! Your schnauzer with the cropped ears and my boy look like twins-- I actually had to do a double-take. So glad it's working out! My dogs hang with the adult girls even unsupervised now. I've seen them get their butts kicked my my top hen, so I'm no longer worried. I was even shocked to find out they didn't bother my new chicks! They were interested of course, but Broody gave them both a scolding and they stay far away now. I'd never let them near the chicks unsupervised, but it's nice to know if the dogs got out things would probably be fine.

I know it seems like everyone is in Phoenix or more up north.

I thought they looked a lot alike also, but mine is a female and doesn't have cropped ears(must be a trick of the light.) I'm not as worried about her with the chickens. She has a healthy respect for who is the boss.
The other one is bigger than the normal size for a min. schnauzer(26 lb.) and not quite as true to "schnauzer personality". She was a rescue, and while she's a great dog and we love her dearly, she's a little sneaky and knows exactly when she can do whatever she wants to.

That's exactly what I was worried about - them getting out and something happening before I could stop it. Now, at least, I can relax a little.

Oh shoot!
My sister just left here for Tucson yesterday. Her daughter would have loved to deliver a chick or two.

My husband is driving home from Colorado on Sunday night or Monday morning... is that too long to wait? He'll be coming through PHX and I'm sure he could pick up some chicks for newchickmom09!

And also, have you called Pat, the local chicken lady? She posts on craigslist a lot. She almost always has chicks. Just don't trust her cochins - they come out a little un-cochinish! She has beautiful silkies though. http://tucson.craigslist.org/grd/1763835331.html

So I got three hens (Del, BO and Ancona) from Mahonri back on the 26th so nearly three weeks ago. We left two days later to go camping and while I was gone the neighbor picked up 2 eggs on two of the days 1 on one and 0 on one. Each day there was a speckled brown egg and on the days with two the second egg was grown as well so I have to assume that the Delaware laid three days and the BO laid two. Then it got hot and since we've been back home the Delaware is the only one laying, she is giving us 4-5 eggs a week. Is it just the heat? Could the move still have them thrown off? I had worried that my nest box was too small but I've seen them all in there and the Del that is laying is pretty big and she likes one of the side boxes which are smaller than the middle? With the chicks that I got from Sock Puppet with her Cochin I've been feeding everyone starter and I've been putting out eggshell for the layers to eat if they choose. I dun know. My three originals are almost 17 weeks old so I should see some pullet bullets soon, that will be cool. Also the chicks from Sock Puppet are getting some coloring I'll try to get picks up so we can guess at what they'll look like.
