Sorry it happened to you, too! I have been getting on my daughter who loves to squat down to let all the chickens come surround her. I am worried it will happen to her.

Recommended for ALL! You never know when a curious chicken is going to peck at that sparkle in your eye!

BTW, we butchered that little roo that got my eye. I wasn't mad at him, it was just his time. Too many roos. He made a fine soup.

ETA: I did get a prescription for some antibiotic drops. Considering the "cleanliness" of the average chicken's beak, it is probably a good idea. And eye infection would be bad.

Ouch! An eye peck sounds painful.

I'm locking down the incubator tomorrow. I'm not very confident about the quail hatching. I tried to candel but the eggs are heavily spotted and hard to see thru. I guess we'll see.

It FINALLLY rained at my house yesterday....while I was at work, so I missed it. I learned 9 out of 10 roosters are too stupid to come in out of the rain. One or two of my "to be eaten" roos looked really bedraggled. Poor fellas. I hope they dont get chilled...which sounds silly, because it is still 100 degrees outside. The DH has promised to put up my overhang ASAP.

My new tortoise almost croaked too. Desert animals: NOT equipped to deal with water. She fell in the ONE hole on my ENTIRE property, which was 1/2 under the porch overhang. (I am stubbing up the waterline there) It was a tortoise death trap. Anyway, after I spent 25 mintutes looking for her, the DH found her and pulled her out. He set up a makeshift pen, I made her two dens, and tossed out some extra treats. Apparently, she was not in the mood for socialization. She sniffed at me and stomped off into the den.

Gratuitous pic of the neighbor's turkey hen and poults...look at her...thinking about coming over....DONT DO IT LADY!

My dad seems to think he has lost his female, but there is no way he'll give up Barney. Perhaps you dad can pimp out his tortoise for a week? It is breeding season....

Laree - I LOVE the quilts!

Cheerful - I didn't send you any seeds, did I? I am slacking! SOON!

A chicken update: One of my silkies managed to get tangled up in a string. It was around both of her feet and wrapped tightly around her toes. I held her and did one of the chicken hypnotizing tricks. I held her like a baby and ran my finger from under her beak to her tail for a few minutes. It made her fall asleep! My husband got to do the hard part with the scissors while I held her... the string was tangled so tightly that it took 20 minutes and a variety of tools (a seam ripper from the sewing box, and surgical scissors from my dental instruments) before she was free. The string had twisted one toe so it was upside down and crossed with another. It remained upside down even without any string. Poor chicken.

Cactus Fruit Jelly for Rufus - I've made it a few times! YUM.

Pick the fruit, put a fork through them and roast them like marshmallows to burn off the stickers, then put them in a pot. Add enough water to cover and boil for 20 - 30 minutes. Run through a strainer to separate the juice from the ickies.

Then, follow d the directions on the box of pectin. Not that they have a specific cactus fruit jelly recipe, but they have recipes for other fruit juices...

4 cups juice
7 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 container liquid pectin

Sterilize your jars. Combine everything except the pectin, bring to a full boil, add the pectin, Boil for 2 minutes. Put in jars. Put on lids. Boil jars for 10 minutes to sterilize.

I don't have any hens, but I have a Houdan roo that's been masquerading as a hen (fyi-i am treating for mites)

I have a girlfriend in Gilbert that has a buff polish that I'm pretty sure is a rooster.
