Arizona Chickens

For a couple of years we ran up to the rim the day after Thanksgiving to cut down our own tree.

But a few years back we bought a nice artificial tree and so we use it now.

1 work day down, 2 to go this week and the Wednesday from 7AM to 2:30pm will be a LONG day.

Thanks Mahonri, Sure hope I have a shot at it! It would solve any number of problems I have with Chaunakah gifts!!! And my inability to actually turn those doors I scrounged into a coop!

GCKid: Most of the ones I got aren't at weight either, I think its because of the six I kept four are pullets. One of the cockrels started having leg problems last week, so I butchered him, he dressed out at 5 pounds. Killing something I'd raised from a chick was a little bit hard, but my guilt went away as soon as he was cooked up. That was the most delicious bird I've ever eaten.

My girls aren't laying great, but they're doing a lot better than they were over the summer, when I was lucky to get 2 eggs a day. I'm averaging 6 eggs a day, from four that turned one in August, two that will be one in December and two that hatched in June and are just starting to lay.

Bob's Henhouse :

ca, I actually use polished rocks from the 99cent store, they are a little flatter, might give the chicks a better chance at regaining their footing, but rocks, marbles, anything to keep the water from being too deep. I leave them in for a week or maybe two, depends on the size of the chicks. After just a few days they should be able to keep from drowning.

Thanks Bob! I put small rock cores in the water and none of the chickens drowned

. They seem "smart" enough now (two weeks tomorrow) but I wanted to be sure. I guess I can take them out also. I'll have to put a blanket around the brooder though. It was 30° in the coop this morning at 4 and the chicks looked a little uncomfortable.

They were all bunching up under the lamp. I guess they will develop feathers quickly

Mahonri: we are still going up to the Rim this year to get a tree. They just smell soooo much better than the artificial ones. And hunting for a tree is always fun.

I am not good at hunting otherwise but the trees at least don't run away when you approach.
