Arizona Chickens

It is VERY cold up here in Chino Valley.....we are expecting another storm. We had TONS of rain this past Sunday. Everything is as protected as I can make it. I really hate mornings sometimes...

Thanks -- I totally spaced on that one - I use that site all the time and know how to read it - today, I check it out and was reading the 41 as the high and the 11 as the low - totally spaced - how in the world could there be a high and low at the same time of day? - duh.

Friday night is coop-in from 4-9pm
Saturday the doors open at 6:00am, judging starts at 9:00am, and junior showmanship starts at 10:00am. Small raffle items are drawn in the afternoon.
Sunday the doors open at 7:00am, junior show starts at 8:00am, awards ceremony is at 10:00am, grand raffle (animals, quilt & cage) is at 11:00am, and after the raffle people are allowed to coop-out.

I think Saturday would be the day to go because sometimes people who entered from out of town, take their birds home Saturday evening.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but would the poultry show be a good place to take our little roo chick? I don't want to really get rid of him, but a trade would be neat. Are there chickens for sale there at the show? Sorry, I have no idea what to expect.

5pinkarrows, there will be sale cages at the show. Usually, this is when the breeders sell their excess chickens. You may be able to find one to trade with you. Sometimes, after the judging, people will put "for sale" signs up on the chickens that were entered into the show. So, you should be able to find something you like.

And there will be show quality chickens for the raffle on Sunday.

Was 27 degrees this morning in the chicken house. Got a second heat lamp yesterday. All chicks still alive. Thank godness I did not order any that would be shipped today!

Added another 250 watt light to the babies house and didn't lose anybody. But I think moving the ducks helped too.

It has been cold. I have my brooder coop wraped in uhual blankets and have 4 heat lamps in there. I usually keep my small chicks on the porch but my porch is currently a mess and a chicken hospital. I have a chicken that got beat up. I also have a wicked case of mites. Thankfully, only one coop has mites. Its the same pen that got mites last time too. So, I have the lovely task of fixing this problem.

Mites are a tiny little bug that live on birds/chickens. There are a few different types of mites/poultry lice. You can check your chickens by separating feathers all the way to the skin and look to see if anything is crawling on them. I've learned a good place to check is the vent, under wings where the wing meets the body and on the back of the chickens neck. The eggs are a white/transparent color and they are in clusters on the base of the feather shafts. I've noticed the eggs mostly by the neck feathers. Last time i checked them for mites was about 2 months earlier and saw none. What prompted me to check again was a chick seemed a bit weak and while I was looking at it I saw eggs on the feathers. SOOO, I'm treating them. I will even dust coops that I don't see any signs of mites
