Arizona Chickens

PIMA - I don't have any lights and I have a few new layers in the last few days (excluding my "needy" chicken). I wouldn't say all hope is lost. I'd like to hook up lights to my coops but its just pretty unrealistic for me. I won't count on a lot of eggs from them.

MAHONRI - I have 15 eggs between Saturday, Sunday and today, 2 of which are quail.

I'm only getting 1 egg per day, but almost all are either molting of have just gotten over a molt. I dewormed all the adults over the process of a couple of weeks (wazine first and then fendezabole sp?. I purchased flock raiser today (higher protein content - 20%), to help them regrow their feathers - no need for extra calcium, since they're not laying. I'm anticipating lots of eggs once they finish their molt --- I might even add a light for the first time, if they don't cooperate, since they have basically had all summer off.

Edited to add: 1 egg per day is fine right now, cause i can't eat them anyway for the next couple of weeks due to the deworming.

24 F Brrrrrr. I feel like I woke up someplace far north of here. I just checked the chooks and they were happy little balls of puffed-up feathers on their roosts. Unfortunately, last night brought the end of the growing year to fresh lima beans, green beans, sweet potatoes, figs, eggplants, tomatoes, most sweet peppers, okra and chayote. On the bright side, I have a lot of new garden space opening up.

The Tucson Poultry Show last weekend was fantastic! My favorite breeds were the MGB and Cornish. Kinda like the Laurel and Hardy of poultry. I was also smitten by the giant BA and BO roosters. They were enough to make me want to move out of city limits.

Tanichca, congratulations on you success at the Poultry show! I wasn't sure if I saw your birds or not.

a2ms4chickens, it was great to meet you! You must be so proud of your son. His birds were beautiful.

Hi everyone!

Brrrr!! It's 23 degrees here at my house in N. Phoenix....crazy! The 2 month olds are in a "chick mat" of fluffy sprawled little shapes under a heat lamp, and the Ladies are under one as well, although they were grumbling about the infared light. They probably don't need the heat, but I was just worried.....

I'm up for some kind of a meet-up - it would be great to put faces to names, etc

We will be going to the Tour de Coops on Saturday from the central starting point. Not sure what time yet since we're having some drywall work done in the morning. About how many homes are usually on the tour, does anyone know? I'm not sure how it works...I guess we get the map/tour info once we show our tickets?

If anyone is going (or hosting a coop), let me know if you like

It sounds like I need to go to the poultry show next time.....that would have been a blast!

Until then....keep warm everyone!!

I chased everybody into the coop last night and shut the door, but left it ajar and unlatched. They were not happy campers getting chased off their roosts. There are plenty of roosts in the coop for them, but they were already settled in for the night. They should have been ok regardless but I didn't want to take any chances. Have a few more chicks hatching from the big white eggs I put in. Already have one that got the top of the shell off and then gave up.

Very cold in Wickenburg as well. Checked my nearly 3 week olds in the coop at 4 am and they were roaming around, not even sitting under the heat lamps. Poor things get used to cold early in life. My coop is not insulated at all. I have two 250 W red heat lamps and made sure no draft. The chicks seem just peachy

. Hope we'll make it to the age where they get feather protection. I am constantly worried that the electricity might go out...

Almost 1/4 inch of ice over the (mostly empty) above ground pool. Hard to refill the babies waterers with the hoses frozen! Everybody made it through the night. My weather station thermometer must not be calibrated very well, it said it was 34 at 6:00, and I know it was colder than that, but was too lazy to get out another thermometer to see what it read.
