No. Feather sexing is only reliable in breeds bred to be feather-sexed. Most of these are production leghorn-type hens.

Very unreliable. I gave hatched a lot of SLW And kept only the ones that were hens according to wing feathers and half of those turned out to be roosters. I've found there seems to be a consistent in males of having a lighter head Most noticeable around two weeks old. The females keep darkers heads and necks. I've been doing some research into vent sexing and a beginner has about 70% accuracy (and will kill 10% of the chicks they sex).

So...are you up for the project? Maybe cross a jersey giant or a plymouth rock or a brahma for size? Two starter outcrosses, then breed the F1 ffspring together.

So it would have to be a silkie roo over a JG hen right?

Are there JG in white?

I can tell you a black Silkie roo and a buff orp make an interesting combo. If a minute I thought I had gotten something really neat until I began really looking over my jumbo sized Silkie and went back to look at the egg it came out of and realized weeks after they are moved they can still be fertilized by the previous rooster.

WOW, great info. I won't even try vent sexing. Plan on keeping all 5 either way. My SLWs are my favorites and would eventually like to breed them. That's why I was hoping for a Roo in this hatch. I do have one chick that is more white than black all over. I'll try to post a group picture tomorrow.

I for one think the Aloha project is COOL! And Patch is an amazing looking roo!

And that hen that Tucson Tofu hatched out is even cooler!!! put her under Patch and see what you get!

Welcome, welcome, Ravishaw! I had a horrible rooster that attacked my kids, too. Then he attacked me so bad one day that I still have a scar on my knee. I planned to just leave him out all night and bless a coyote, but my husband wouldn't let me. We had 5 daughters and 2 female dogs, so I think he just wanted some other male around the house. Then that mean old Sugar Daddy attacked my husband one day, and that was the last I ever saw of that rooster. I hope you find a good one soon. We finally got a silkie bantam and he's is so much better!

Awwww...big hugs to you! People on the silkie thread I read get pretty elitist sometimes, too. Ultimately, a chicken is a chicken, whether you pay $2 or $200 for it. Personally, I am SOOOO impressed that you would even take on something like that! It sounds exciting, but far beyond my capabilities. I came too late to know what the ALOHA project even is, but the breeding thing makes my head spin. If you have posted something here or elsewhere about your project, I would love to read all about it. Link me!

Laree,
I am a little late but I still want to say that you can be totally proud! Sounds like that person could not contain their jealousy! They are just getting mad because you are having success with a fun project. Just enjoy what your doing and ignore the quacking.

Oh pooh. I called Higley feeds and my wire is still mia. Anyone have another source for a large amount of 1/2 inch hardware cloth? My order is 1/2 X 1/2 X48" X 100'. The cost was $100.00.

I'm getting fed up! I want a NICE enclosure (with an eye to expansion heh heh heh)

Going back to craigs list now.
