crap. I just read the forecast.

Anyone have suggestions how I can keep my plants from freezing? Newspaper? plastic? water? wind? smudge pot?

I agree with lights. My husband uses the large square work lights under the citrus trees with a sheet over the top.
If it works for the chickens...

My Marans have been laying up a storm. From 3 hens I received 2 yesterday and another 3 today....but when I looked closer one egg was lighter and bigger with a pointy end. It's a huge pullet egg! I am guessing from one of the production reds. My pullets are only 18 weeks old. When I rechecked yesterdays eggs, there was another one from her instead of the Marans. Pretty exciting......I wasn't even looking for pullet eggs yet!

Mahonri, I think if you water your plants and toss a cover over them you should be fine. I have also used the christmas lights with good sucess. Your yard seems pretty protected there. In Kingman I used milk jugs full of water under the plant covers (sort of a heat sink), it has to get really really cold for the milk jugs to freeze.

Eggs from NY were shipped to me today. Do you think I am going to get egg sickles? The weather was sooo beautiful. I am ready for spring....not this.

Anyone want to trade me something for a BR and a BA?? They are HANDS DOWN the noisiest chickens I have ever heard in my LIFE. It know it's probably my fault because I give them mealwoms every day when I get home from work and then they come to the back door and just scream at the top of their lungs!! It's too much for my HOA to handle and I'm sure someone is going to rat me out. Besides, they're the alphas and are mean to my 2 youngest.. Like REALLY mean - food aggressive like dogs can be, but all the time. I've never seen behavior like that and they need to get mixed in to a different pecking order, I think.

If not, no worries... I can just CL them.

I have a few breeds. I have a pair of Silkies (and a handful of chicks), a few varieties of marans, polish (blue & black only), Houdans, Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Ameruacanas and Phoenix. I just got White face black Spanish and salmon faverolles from hatchery stock but after I ordered them I found someone who will egg swap. I may end up just free ranging these ones after they get big enough.
