I'm new to the site and found some AZ people. I'm in Chino Valley and I get my chicks from Olsens. Their variety is pretty good however not if you want straightruns - at least at the store near me. I saw some chat about summer heat here - this will be our girls' first summer outside so I'm hoping that they will help us help them - u watch your birds long enough you can tell when one or more are unhappy. I've been super lucky with these birds so far and no major issues have come up. Knock on wood that my gals stay good.

I needed the laugh this evening; I'm glad I popped online again tonight. What a great group. Now I really want to add a silkie or two...I've avoided the fuzzy (or is it feathery?) chicken math thus far, but am sooooo close to putting in a chick order. I might end up going from 4 to 24!​

Hello all, I could use a little advice, please. I understand merging new youngsters with an established flock is ugly, but can be done with patience (once they are old enough, of course). But could I safely add a couple of silkies in with my 3 year old hens (1 NHR,2 BR, 1EE) along with the new full-sized youngsters? I am concerned that they might always be picked on. I'd love to add them, but don't want to keep 2 separate coops going beyond getting new chickens integrated into the flock. I'm sure I will get to the point where I have at least 2 coops, but just can do it right now.

I have separate coops. When I put younger birds in, I take everyone out at night and move them to a new coop at night. I've not had too many problems this way.
