Buy some extra mealworms for your broody, she deserves it (although you should write on the golf balls "not an egg", practice only

Gallo, they are Delawares

. They were 12 weeks (couple weeks ago when I took the pics). They are growing fastest of all birds I have, which will make them my prefered meat suppliers if they do well in the summer heat (testing comming up in a few months). Although mine are trying to eat my shoes as well when I get into the coop I don't find it annoying at all. They are just looking for a handout. They are absolutely not shy (which I love) and lead others to food sources because they are so adventurous and seem to be pretty smart as well. I have not had any instances of them destroying anything or being mean to other chickens. If they can cope with the heat, I will absolutely keep them.

Well, that sounds like just the kind of bird I'd want to have! I do like smart, inquisitive and adventurous birds. I think that when one of my hens goes broody, I'd like to put some eggs under her and the Delawares sound interesting.

Mahalo4- Several of us have talked about getting together for a Chicken processing learning day.....but we need a teacher...

After the Easter Hatch there should be plenty of extra roos to freeze.

Mahonri- Let us know what you find under your broody this morning!! Rocky is almost a dad. This is incubation day 13 on some of his eggs and they have big wiggly blobs inside!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Good morning everyone!

Sorry I haven't been around lately. Curse of the corporate accountant. I just finished year-end, we are rushing to finish January, and then quickly turn over February before the auditors get here.

Maybe then I will get a lunch-time again?

Mahonri- yay for broodies! Anyone want my 5 broodies and 1 broody turkey?

BTW- While a broody OEGB is scarier than a velociraptor, a broody turkey is a WHOOOOOOLE different ball game. It cracks me up---but I dont want to her to hatch, so I have jump on that grenade everyday. It's nuts.

All you people with broodies... I wish I had one. I've gone 15 months with chickens and not one broody. My least favorite thing about keeping chickens is raising chicks since they have to be kept separately from the hens. If they had a chicken mama and didn't need a human mama, that would be perfect!!

P.S. Welcome back, Laree

Miss you, friend. Still have a live-in MIL?

I was so destroyed by what y'all had to say about the Delawares! They were at the top of my list if I ever expand my flock. Are they really that annoying? ![/quote :

!

Gallo,
Maybe it's just my hatchery stock delawares from Ideal that are like that. If I had a nice breeder one to compare it with, maybe that's the difference. OR, perhaps they really are just terrors of the chicken yard

But they lay well and consistently and I like them AND their temperment much better than my RIRs who I got rid of.

Thanks for that elaboration pastrymama! I'd like to find a local breeder that has had them in our environment for a few generations (at least). All but one of my current girls came from local breeders that have had them for many years and I think that makes them a bit more special, even though they probably wouldn't come close to meeting the standards of perfection for their breeds. Besides the benefits of supporting our local folks, I think that there is a big upside to having stock who's ancestors have been through and survived the rigors of our heat.

Gallo,
I am trying to keep mental note but I think there is a "local" person in Chino Valley and turkeybreeder has pure breed Dellie eggs (and I am going to get some soon
